How to Get to Playa de El Tostadero

Getting to Playa de El Tostadero is surprisingly simple, given its privileged location. San Vicente de la Barquera is a well-connected municipality on the western coast of Cantabria, accessible both by road and public transport.

By Car

If you're coming by car, the most common and comfortable way to get there, you should take the A-8 motorway (Autovía del Cantábrico). If you're coming from the east (Santander), look for the exit for San Vicente de la Barquera. If you're coming from the west (Asturias), you'll also find a direct exit to the town. Once in San Vicente, Playa de El Tostadero is located east of the urban center, next to the road that borders the estuary. There are signs that will easily guide you.

Parking

One of the great attractions of this beach is the availability of parking. In the vicinity of the beach and along the road that flanks it, you will find parking areas, some of them free. It's true that in high season it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot, but it's never an impossible mission, and the proximity to the town always offers alternatives. Our recommendation is to arrive early if you visit in the middle of summer to secure a good spot.

On Foot

If you are already staying in San Vicente de la Barquera, you can reach the beach comfortably on foot. From the town center, a pleasant 10-15 minute walk along the estuary will take you directly to El Tostadero. It's a highly recommended walk, as it will allow you to enjoy the views of the port and local architecture before reaching the sand.

Public Transport

San Vicente de la Barquera has regular bus connections with Santander and other towns in Cantabria and Asturias. Once at the San Vicente bus station, the beach is a short walk away, as we mentioned. Although there is no specific bus stop right at the beach, the proximity to the station and the town center makes it a viable option for those who prefer not to drive.

The Sand and Water

When we step onto Playa de El Tostadero, the first thing we notice is its fine, golden sand, incredibly pleasant underfoot. It's the kind of sand that invites you to build sandcastles, walk barefoot, or simply lie down and feel its warmth. Unlike some beaches more exposed to the Atlantic, here the sand is soft and is usually not mixed with pebbles or large rocks, making it a very comfortable place for all kinds of beach activities.

The waters of El Tostadero are another of its great assets. Being located within the estuary of San Vicente de la Barquera, its waters are notably calmer and warmer than those of the beaches open to the Cantabrian Sea. We find a safe and pleasant swim, ideal for the little ones or for those who enjoy swimming calmly, without worrying about currents or strong waves. The clarity of the water varies depending on the tides and estuary conditions, but it is generally clean and suitable for swimming.

It's important to consider that, being an estuary beach, the water depth does not increase abruptly, which adds an extra layer of safety, especially for families. The tide changes are noticeable, and the beach can vary in width depending on whether the tide is high or low, but it always offers a generous space to enjoy. We always say that the combination of fine sand and serene waters is the perfect formula for a relaxing, worry-free day at the beach.

Services and Facilities

Playa de El Tostadero, being an urban and popular beach, has a good range of services and facilities that make the stay much more comfortable and pleasant for all visitors. We think it's essential for a complete beach experience to have everything you need close at hand.

During the summer season, the beach has lifeguards who watch over our safety, an aspect we greatly value, especially if we're with children. Their presence allows us to enjoy the waters with greater peace of mind. Furthermore, you will find showers to rinse off the sand and salt before heading home or taking a walk through the town, which is always a plus. Public restrooms/WCs are also available.
