Nestled between majestic cliffs and the golf course of the same name, this cove presents itself as a well-kept secret, a natural paradise where time seems to stand still and the beauty of the landscape completely envelops us. It's one of those beaches that, once you discover it, becomes a recurring spot in your getaway plans, a corner you always want to return to.

For us, visiting Playa de Mataleñas is synonymous with disconnecting. Its access, although it requires descending a long staircase, helps keep it relatively secluded from the crowds, especially outside the peak summer months. This gives it an atmosphere of tranquility and exclusivity that few urban beaches can offer. Here, the roar of the Cantabrian Sea and the cry of seagulls are the only soundtrack, inviting us to immerse ourselves in the calm and enjoy the vastness of the landscape. It's a place where nature shows itself in all its splendor, with its crystal-clear waters and golden sand caressed by the sea breeze.

How to Get to Playa de Mataleñas

Getting to Playa de Mataleñas is a fundamental part of the experience, and although its access is unique, it's not complicated. For those coming by car, the address is simple: it's at the end of Avenida del Faro, just before reaching the iconic Faro de Cabo Mayor. There is a free public parking area nearby, although its capacity is limited, especially on days with high attendance. Our advice is to arrive early if you plan to visit in summer or on sunny weekends to secure a spot. From the parking lot, access to the beach is via a long but well-maintained staircase that descends down the cliff, offering spectacular views along the way.

For those who prefer public transport, Santander has an excellent urban bus service (TUS). Several lines, such as line 1 or 2, bring us close to the El Sardinero area, and from there, a 15-20 minute walk along the promenade takes us to Avenida del Faro. There is also the option of taking a more specific bus that drops us off closer to the Faro de Cabo Mayor. The option of walking or cycling along the bike lane from El Sardinero is also highly recommended, as it allows us to enjoy the coastal landscape and feel the sea breeze before reaching our destination. It's an active and rewarding way to start the beach day.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Mataleñas captivates us instantly with its fine, golden sand, with a texture so pleasant it invites us to walk barefoot and lay out a towel to enjoy the sun. Unlike other beaches in Cantabria, the sand here is predominantly soft, with hardly any pebbles or rocks on the shore, making it very comfortable for swimming and playing. The golden color of the sand contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of its waters, creating a picture-postcard color palette. It's one of the features we value most about this beach, as it contributes to that feeling of a natural paradise we so often seek.

The waters of Mataleñas are, in general, calm and crystal-clear, especially on days with little swell. Being protected by the cliffs, the cove usually offers a more serene swim than other beaches more exposed to the open sea. The water quality is excellent, and its clarity allows us to easily see the seabed, inviting us to explore with snorkeling gear if we are fans of underwater life. The water temperature, as is usual in the Cantabrian Sea, is refreshing, ideal for combating the summer heat and revitalizing the body. However, on days with rough seas, the waves can be considerable, offering a different spectacle and an opportunity for the more daring, although always with caution and respecting the lifeguards' instructions.

Services and Facilities

Despite its more natural and sheltered character, Playa de Mataleñas has some essential services that ensure a comfortable and safe stay. During the summer season, the beach has a lifeguard service, which gives us peace of mind when enjoying a swim, especially if we are with children. The presence of lifeguards is a plus, as they watch over our safety and inform us about sea conditions through the flags.

Furthermore, for our comfort, we find showers at the top of the beach, perfect for washing off the sand and salt before heading home. There are also trash bins distributed around the area to keep the beach clean and preserve its natural beauty, something we consider fundamental. However, it's important to note that, due to its location and access, the beach does not have an infrastructure of beach bars or restaurants directly on the sand. For that, we will have to go up to the Parque de Mataleñas, where there is a cafeteria, or head to the El Sardinero area, which is a short distance away and offers a wide variety of dining options. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is limited due to the staircase, so we do not consider it a fully accessible beach.

Best Time to Visit
