Introduction
From the moment we set foot on Playa de Riberuca, in the picturesque municipality of Suances, Cantabria, we knew we were in a special place. It's not the largest or busiest beach on the Cantabrian coast, but that's precisely where its charm lies. It's a sheltered, almost intimate cove that overlooks the mouth of the San Martín estuary, offering us privileged views of the estuary and the comings and goings of small boats.
For us, Playa de Riberuca is synonymous with tranquility and those small pleasures that only the Cantabrian Sea, in its gentlest version, can offer. Its location, slightly removed from the main bustle of Suances but within easy reach of everything, makes it an ideal destination for those looking to disconnect without giving up the comfort of having services nearby. It's a place where time seems to slow down, inviting us to enjoy every ray of sunshine and every sea breeze.
How to Get to Playa de Riberuca
Getting to this Cantabrian gem is relatively easy, and the route itself already gifts us with landscapes that hint at the beauty of the destination. If we're coming from Santander, the capital of Cantabria, the drive takes about 30-40 minutes via the A-67 and then the S-210 or CA-132. The road takes us through green valleys and small towns, a perfect prelude to the charm of Suances.
Once in Suances, Playa de Riberuca is located in the easternmost area of the town, very close to the port and the promenade. We usually follow the signs to the port or the estuary, and from there, it's easy to locate. The access is comfortable, which is always appreciated, especially if we're loaded with towels, umbrellas, and everything needed for a day at the beach.
Transport Options
- By car: This is, without a doubt, the most practical option. There are some parking areas on the streets near the beach, although in high season it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot. Our recommendation is to arrive early or look for public parking a little further away and take a pleasant walk to the sand.
- Public transport: Suances has bus lines connecting it to cities like Santander and Torrelavega. Once in the center of Suances, Playa de Riberuca is within walking distance, perhaps a 15-20 minute walk, allowing us to enjoy the town's atmosphere before reaching the sand.
The Sand and Water
The first thing that catches our attention when stepping onto Playa de Riberuca is its fine, golden sand. It's the kind of sand that invites you to walk barefoot, to feel its softness under your feet, and to build sandcastles with the little ones. Although it's not a large beach, its approximately 250 meters in length are enough to find our own space, even on the busiest days.
The water is, without a doubt, one of its greatest attractions. Being inside the estuary and protected by the mouth, the waters of Riberuca are remarkably calm. This makes it a paradise for families with children, who can play safely at the water's edge, and for those who, like us, seek a relaxing swim without worrying about the large waves of the open Cantabrian Sea. The color of the water, an emerald green that sometimes mixes with the reflections of the estuary, is simply mesmerizing.
Services and Facilities
Despite its more intimate and natural character, Playa de Riberuca doesn't leave us without basic services. During the bathing season, we can count on the presence of lifeguards, a detail that always gives us great peace of mind, especially when we go with children. Safety is paramount, and knowing there are watchful eyes on the shore allows us to relax even more.
Furthermore, we find showers to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home, and also trash bins strategically placed to keep the beach clean and cared for, something we greatly appreciate. Although we won't find large 'chiringuitos' directly on the sand, the proximity to the port and the center of Suances means we have a wide range of bars and restaurants just a few minutes' walk away, where we can enjoy a refreshing drink or a good lunch with sea views.
It's important to note that, being a beach more focused on tranquility and the natural environment of the estuary, it does not have services like umbrella and sunbed rentals, nor specific sports areas on the sand. However, its closeness to the town more than compensates for these absences, offering everything we might need within a short walk.
Best Time to Visit
We believe each season has its particular charm for visiting Playa de Riberuca, but if your main goal is to enjoy swimming and the sun, summer (June, July, and August) is, without a doubt, the best time. During these months, temperatures are more pleasant, days are longer, and the water reaches its warmest temperature, albeit always with the characteristic freshness of the Cantabrian Sea. That said, it's also when you'll find the most people, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot.
If we prefer tranquility and walks along the shore, spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are magical times. The beaches are much clearer, the landscape is painted with vibrant colors, and the light is perfect for photography. It's ideal for long walks, reading a book with the sound of the waves in the background, or simply contemplating the beauty of the surroundings without rush. Even in winter, if the day is sunny, a walk along Riberuca can be a very rewarding experience, feeling the power of the sea and the salty breeze.
