Far from massive tourist bustle, La Garita offers us a more genuine experience, a little piece of Canarian life where time seems to flow at a different pace, more leisurely, more our own.

When we talk about Playa de la Garita, we talk about a beach with its own personality. Its sand, of a dark and shiny color, reminds us of the island's volcanic origin, a distinctive characteristic that makes it unique. Its waters, generally calm and crystal clear, invite swimming and carefree enjoyment, making it a favorite destination for families, couples, and anyone seeking a moment of peace by the sea. How to Get to Playa de la Garita

Getting to Playa de la Garita is relatively straightforward, given its strategic location on the east coast of Gran Canaria, within the municipality of Telde. If we're coming from the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, or from the south of the island, the most comfortable way is usually via the GC-1 highway, the main artery running north to south across the island.

For those traveling by car, the GC-1 is our best ally. We'll take the exit towards Telde/La Garita, which is well signposted. Once we exit the highway, access to the beach is direct and easy to find, following local signs. The journey from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria usually takes about 15-20 minutes, while from the south, for example from Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés, it might take us 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic. Upon arrival, we'll find parking areas on the streets surrounding the beach and the promenade. Although in high season or on busy weekends it can be a bit harder to find a spot right next to it, there are always options a short distance away, allowing for comfortable and hassle-free access.

If we prefer public transport, it's also an excellent option. From the San Telmo Bus Station in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, or from Telde's own station, several Global (the interurban transport company) bus lines bring us close to the La Garita area. The stops are conveniently located just a few minutes' walk from the beach, allowing us to forget the car and enjoy the journey while taking in the scenery. It's a very practical and sustainable alternative for reaching this beautiful corner of Telde.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive and, in our opinion, most attractive features of Playa de la Garita is undoubtedly its sand. Here we won't find the typical golden sands that dominate other beaches in the archipelago. In La Garita, the sand is of volcanic origin, giving it a dark, almost black color that contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of the Atlantic. This dark hue is not only aesthetically striking but also has a particular texture: it's fine, soft to the touch, and very pleasant to walk on barefoot, feeling the warmth the sun transfers to it. It's sand that connects us directly with the geological essence of Gran Canaria, reminding us of the force and beauty of its volcanic origin.

The waters of Playa de la Garita are another of its great attractions. Generally, we encounter a calm sea, with moderate or even non-existent waves, especially on calm days. This makes it an ideal place for safe swimming, suitable for all ages, from the little ones splashing at the shore to adults seeking a relaxing swim. The water quality is consistently good, which has earned it the Blue Flag recognition on numerous occasions, a distinction of environmental and service excellence. Its transparency allows us to see the seabed in many areas, inviting us to observe underwater life with just a simple snorkel mask.

A nearby natural element we also highlight is El Bufadero de la Garita. Although it's not part of the main bathing area, it's a spectacular rocky formation located just a few meters from the beach, at the end of the promenade. It's a set of caves and natural channels carved by the action of the sea into the volcanic rock. When the tide and waves are right, water forcefully enters these cavities, creating water jets and a characteristic sound, like a 'snort', which gives the place its name. It's an impressive natural spectacle, a demonstration of the force of nature that's worth watching and photographing, although always with caution and respecting safety guidelines. It's a perfect complement to a beach day, adding a touch of adventure and natural wonder to our visit.
