Introduction
Welcome to one of the most treasured gems of the beaches of Gran Canaria: the imposing Playa de Maspalomas. This paradise corner, located in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, is not just a beach, but a unique ecosystem that combines the majesty of its dunes with the serenity of the Atlantic. When thinking of Gran Canaria, the image of this vast blanket of golden sand stretching to the horizon, guarded by the historic Maspalomas Lighthouse, inevitably comes to mind. It's a place that invites us to get lost, to dream, and to reconnect with nature in its purest state.
From our first visit, Playa de Maspalomas captivated us with its uniqueness. It's a landscape that seems taken from another continent, with dunes reminiscent of a miniature desert, but which lead into crystal-clear and temperate waters. It's a destination that attracts all types of travelers: from families looking for a safe day of sun and sand, to couples seeking a romantic sunset, or even naturists who find the desired freedom in its designated areas. Its proximity to the vibrant tourist life of Meloneras and Playa del Inglés makes it an ideal starting point to explore the best of the island's south.
How to Get to Playa de Maspalomas
Getting to Playa de Maspalomas is relatively easy, given its popularity and Gran Canaria's excellent infrastructure. We always recommend planning the journey a little to make the most of the day.
By Car
If we choose to rent a car, the GC-1 highway will take us directly to the south of the island. From Gran Canaria Airport, the journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. Once in Maspalomas, we will find several parking areas, although they can fill up quickly during high season. The closest parking lots are usually near the Maspalomas Lighthouse or in the Meloneras area, from where we can access the beach on foot. It's important to remember that direct vehicle access to the dune area is prohibited to protect the natural environment.
By Public Transport
Gran Canaria has a good bus network, known as 'guaguas'. Several lines connect Playa de Maspalomas with other towns on the island, including Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the airport. The closest bus stops to the beach are 'Faro de Maspalomas' or 'Estación de Maspalomas', from where we can walk comfortably. It's an economical and sustainable option that many visitors choose.
By Taxi or Ride-Hailing Service (VTC)
For those who prefer comfort, taxis and ride-hailing services (VTC) are available from any point on the island. It's a more expensive option, but very convenient if we are traveling with luggage or looking for a quick, hassle-free transfer right to the beach shore or our nearby accommodation.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Maspalomas surprises us with a combination of elements that make it unique. The sand is, without a doubt, its calling card.
The Sand: A Golden Desert
What catches our attention the most is the quality of its sand: fine and of an intense golden color, which shines under the Canarian sun. But beyond its texture, it's the expanse of the dunes that is truly impressive. These mobile dunes, declared a Special Nature Reserve, are a geological spectacle that transforms with the wind, creating a changing and fascinating landscape. Walking barefoot on this sand, feeling how it molds to our feet, is an almost meditative experience. It's the perfect place to feel the freedom and immensity of the landscape.
The Water: Calm and Clarity
The waters of Playa de Maspalomas are generally calm and crystal-clear, especially in the area closest to the Lighthouse. The current is usually gentle, making it an ideal place for swimming and for children to enjoy without worry. The water temperature is pleasant year-round, around 18-22°C, allowing us to enjoy a dip even in the winter months. As we move away from the lighthouse and venture into the area connecting to Playa del Inglés, the waves can be a bit more pronounced, which attracts some water sports enthusiasts.
