How to Get to Playa de El Pozuelo

Getting to Playa de El Pozuelo is relatively easy, and the route itself offers spectacular views of the Costa Tropical. If we're coming from Granada city, the most direct way is to take the A-44 motorway towards Motril, then connect to the A-7 towards Almería. We must take the exit towards Albuñol, which will lead us along a winding local road that gently descends to the coast. This route, although with some curves, is very picturesque and allows us to appreciate the lush subtropical vegetation that characterizes this area, with its crops of cherimoyas, avocados, and mangoes.

If our starting point is Málaga or Almería, the A-7 motorway will also connect us directly to the area. Once we approach the municipality of Albuñol, the signs to the beach are clear. Access by car is comfortable, and although it's not a beach with a giant designated parking lot, there are usually areas to park nearby, especially in the low or mid-season. In the busiest months, like July and August, it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot right next to the sand, so we recommend arriving early to secure a good place. Public transport to the beach is more limited, with a private car being the most recommended option to enjoy the freedom to explore the surroundings as well.

The Sand and Water

One of the aspects that most catches our attention about Playa de El Pozuelo is its uniqueness regarding the sand and water. Here we won't find the typical fine, golden sand of the Atlantic, but rather sand of a dark, almost black hue, which mixes harmoniously with small pebbles and stones. This composition, which we could describe as 'mixed' or 'coarse', is very characteristic of the Granada beaches on the Costa Tropical and gives it a rustic, natural charm. For us, walking barefoot on this sand is a different experience; the contrast with the heat of the sun and the coolness of the sea is very pleasant, and we love how the small pebbles massage our feet. Furthermore, its composition keeps the water incredibly clear, as the sand doesn't easily get stirred up, offering us exceptional visibility.

As for the water, it is, without a doubt, one of the biggest attractions of this Albuñol beach. We are met with crystal-clear waters of an intense turquoise blue that invite us for a swim from the first moment. The cleanliness of the sea is palpable, and it's common for Playa de El Pozuelo to be awarded the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies its excellent quality. The waters are usually calm, with moderate waves, making it a safe and very pleasant place to swim, especially for children. The water temperature, influenced by its location on the Costa Tropical, is generally mild for much of the year, allowing us to enjoy long swims from spring until well into autumn. The water's transparency also makes it ideal for activities like snorkeling, as we can easily observe the marine life inhabiting its nearby rocky seabeds.

We find lifeguards monitoring the safety of swimmers during the high season, which gives us extra peace of mind, especially if we're with children.
