Nestled at the foot of the imposing Peñón de Salobreña and under the watchful gaze of its historic Arab castle, this small cove offers a different beach experience, far from the bustle of larger sandy shores. It is a place where time seems to stand still, inviting us to disconnect and immerse ourselves in the beauty of its landscape.

We are looking at one of those beaches in Granada that, despite its modest size, possesses an overwhelming personality. Its mix of pebbles and dark sand, bathed by crystal-clear and serene waters, makes it a perfect oasis for those seeking tranquility. The natural protection provided by the cliffs and the rock itself means its waters are, almost always, like a millpond, ideal for a restorative swim or for enjoying Mediterranean calm. How to Get to Playa del Caletón

Getting to Playa del Caletón is relatively straightforward, although its semi-urban character and particular location require some directions. If we come by car, the best option is to head towards the center of Salobreña, following signs towards the Peñón area. There is no exclusive, giant parking lot for this cove, but we will find parking options on the adjacent streets or near the Paseo Marítimo, from where we can access on foot. During the summer months, especially in July and August, finding a spot can be a bit more challenging, so we recommend arriving early to avoid crowds.

From the center of Salobreña, the cove is accessible on foot with a pleasant walk. If we are staying in the old town, we can descend through its steep and picturesque streets to the Peñón area, enjoying views of the sea and the village itself. Once near the Peñón, Playa del Caletón is located right at its base, on the east side. It is a walk that allows us to appreciate the local architecture and the charm of this Granada municipality before reaching our final destination. For those who prefer public transport, some local bus lines in Salobreña can take us close to the promenade area, from where the walk is short and comfortable.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive characteristics of Playa del Caletón is, without a doubt, the composition of its seabed. Here we will not find the typical fine, golden sand we often associate with Mediterranean beaches. Instead, we are greeted by a peculiar mix of dark pebbles and coarse sand, which gives it a wild and very natural appearance. This particularity, far from being an inconvenience, adds a touch of authenticity and rusticity to the cove, making each step a different experience. The dark tone of the sand also contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of its waters, creating a visually very attractive and photogenic landscape.

The waters of Playa del Caletón are, for us, one of its greatest virtues. Being sheltered by the Peñón de Salobreña and the surrounding cliffs, the cove usually enjoys enviable calm. They are crystal-clear, tranquil, and shallow waters in the first few meters, making them perfect for swimming, especially for families with small children or for those who simply want to float without worries. Underwater visibility is excellent, inviting snorkeling to discover the rich marine life that inhabits among its rocks. The water temperature, characteristic of the Costa Tropical, is generally pleasant, allowing for a refreshing swim for much of the year.

Services and Facilities

Despite being a small cove, Playa del Caletón does not lack the basic services that make our beach day more comfortable and pleasant. During the high season, generally from June to September, it has a lifeguard service, which provides us with additional peace of mind, especially if we go with children. Safety is always a priority, and knowing that qualified personnel are watching over us is a great relief.

Regarding amenities, we can find showers to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home, a detail that is always appreciated. Although it does not have its own designated parking lot, it is possible to find parking options on nearby streets or on the Paseo Marítimo, as mentioned. Furthermore, for those who wish to spend the day in total comfort, some nearby establishments offer umbrella and sunbed rentals, allowing us to relax in the sun without having to carry our own equipment. And, of course, we cannot forget the nearby chiringuitos, where we can enjoy a cold drink or a delicious plate of 'pescaíto frito' with sea views.
