How to get to Playa de El Golfo

Getting to Playa de El Golfo is a simple and rewarding experience. From Arrecife, the capital, the drive takes approximately 35-40 minutes, following the LZ-2 south and then turning onto the LZ-703. If coming from the southern tourist areas, like Playa Blanca, the journey is even shorter, about 15-20 minutes via the LZ-2 and then the LZ-703. From Puerto del Carmen, allow about 25-30 minutes.

Once you arrive at the picturesque village of El Golfo, famous for its fresh fish restaurants, you will find parking available, usually free of charge, near the access to the viewpoint. From the parking lot, a well-marked path will guide you through a lunar landscape for a few minutes, until you reach the famous viewpoint that offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Charco de los Clicos and the beach. It is important to remember that direct access to the lagoon and the beach from the viewpoint is restricted to protect this fragile ecosystem. However, you can descend to a section of the black sand and pebble beach from the village, walking a few meters along the coast. It's a short walk, but the terrain can be uneven, so we recommend comfortable footwear.

The sand and water

Playa de El Golfo is a geological marvel that offers a unique tactile and visual experience. Its sand, primarily of an intense black color, is of volcanic origin, mixed with small pebbles and rocks polished by the incessant ebb and flow of the Atlantic. Do not expect fine, golden sand; here, the texture is coarser, sometimes even rocky, but every step is a reminder of the powerful volcanic history of Lanzarote. It is a mixed type of terrain, with a predominance of volcanic sand and rocky areas, giving it a rugged and authentic character.

As for the water, the Atlantic that bathes this coast is a deep blue and, generally, quite rough. The currents can be strong and the swell considerable, which makes Playa de El Golfo not ideal for swimming. In fact, there is no lifeguard surveillance and conditions can be dangerous. We advise enjoying the beach from the shore, admiring the force of the ocean and the contrast with the Charco de los Clicos, but always with caution and respecting local indications. The beauty of this place lies in its landscape, not so much in its swimming possibilities, although the proximity of the village of El Golfo allows us to enjoy calmer beaches just a few minutes away if we are looking for a dip.

Due to its status as a protected natural area and its location within the Parque Natural de los Volcanes, Playa de El Golfo does not have service infrastructure directly on the sand, such as showers, toilets, or chiringuitos. Its charm lies precisely in its wild and virgin state. This means we must come prepared, bringing everything we need if we plan to spend time in the accessible beach area.

However, the nearby village of El Golfo, just a few meters from the viewpoint access, makes up for these shortcomings. Here you will find:
