Introduction
From the moment we set foot on Playa de Area, we feel that special connection with the Galician Atlantic. Located in the beautiful municipality of Viveiro, in the province of Lugo, this beach is certainly one of the best-kept treasures of the Mariña Lucense. It's not just a strip of sand; it's a natural canvas where the sea, sky, and vegetation merge to create a postcard-perfect landscape that invites us to disconnect and live unforgettable moments.
Playa de Area welcomes us with its impressive expanse, its fine golden sand that caresses our feet with every step, and waters that are generally calm and crystal clear, perfect for a refreshing dip. It's the kind of place that makes us feel fortunate to be there, breathing in the sea breeze and contemplating the wild yet gentle beauty of the Galician coast. It's a destination we highly recommend, whether you're looking for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or simply a corner to find peace.
How to Get to Playa de Area
Getting to Playa de Area is relatively easy, making it a very accessible destination for everyone. When we visit, we always prefer the car for the comfort and freedom it offers to explore the surroundings, but there are other options.
By Car
If we're coming from Viveiro, the journey is short and very pleasant. Simply follow the LU-862 road towards Burela/Foz and, after a few kilometers, we'll find clear signs to the beach. The route is scenic, winding between the coast and small rural villages. Once at the beach, we won't have trouble finding parking. There are several free parking areas, both along the road that borders the beach and in designated areas a bit further away, although they can fill up quickly during high season, so we recommend arriving early.
By Public Transport
Although it's not the most frequent option, especially for getting directly to the sand, there are bus lines connecting Viveiro with nearby towns. From the center of Viveiro, there may be a local line or taxi service that can take us to the beach, but it's advisable to check schedules and availability in advance, especially if our visit is outside the summer season.
The Sand and Water
What captivates us most about Playa de Area is, without a doubt, the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. The sand is fine and golden, a true pleasure for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply spreading out our towel and enjoying the sun. Its expanse means that, even on the busiest days, we can always find a spot to feel comfortable and have space.
The waters of Playa de Area are usually calm and crystal clear, with moderate waves that make it very safe for swimming, especially for families with children. This is partly due to its orientation and the natural protection offered by the rock formations flanking its ends. Although we're on the Atlantic, the water temperature is quite pleasant during the summer months, inviting us to dive in and enjoy a good swim. It's a place where we feel safe and relaxed, knowing the water quality is excellent, a fact backed by its regular Blue Flag status.
