From the moment we set foot on Playa de Illas, in the charming municipality of Ribadeo, Lugo, we are immediately captivated by its singular beauty. We find ourselves on the Lugo coast, in beautiful Galicia, a corner of Spain that hides true treasures, and Playa de Illas is, without a doubt, one of the brightest. Its name, which evokes the presence of small 'islands', refers to the impressive rock formations that emerge from the sand and sea, creating an almost magical setting.

Our first impression is always that of a place where nature expresses itself with unmatched force and delicacy. The combination of fine golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and the imposing presence of those natural cliffs and arches transports us to a state of calm and admiration. How to Get to Playa de Illas

Getting to Playa de Illas is a simple and pleasant part of the adventure, as its location in Ribadeo, in the province of Lugo, is well signposted and accessible. For those of us coming from farther away, the most common route is usually via the A-8 motorway, known as the Cantabrian Motorway, which connects much of northern Spain. If we are coming from the west (for example, from A Coruña or Gijón), we will take the exit towards Ribadeo. If our starting point is the east (from Asturias or the Basque Country), we will also look for the sign for Ribadeo.

Once in Ribadeo, the signs to the beaches, and specifically to Playa de Illas (often signposted together with Playa de Os Castros, its spectacular neighbor), are quite clear. Generally, we will follow the local road that runs along the coast. There is a large, free parking area near the beach, which is a great advantage, especially during the summer months. This parking lot usually fills up during peak hours on the sunniest days, so we always recommend arriving early if we want to secure a good spot and enjoy the beach more peacefully.

For those who prefer public transport, Ribadeo has a train station (FEVE) and bus lines connecting it with other Galician and Asturian towns. From the center of Ribadeo, one can opt for a taxi or, in high season, there are sometimes local bus services connecting the town with the most popular beaches. However, for maximum comfort and flexibility, a private car is, without a doubt, the most recommended option for exploring not only Playa de Illas but also the surroundings and other nearby Lugo beaches. The road is scenic and offers beautiful views of the coastline, making the journey part of the enjoyment.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Illas, we cannot fail to highlight the exceptional quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. The sand is certainly fine and of a golden hue that shines under the Galician sun. It is a soft and pleasant-to-the-touch sand, perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply spreading out our towel and relaxing. Its texture invites rest and connection with nature, offering a comfortable base for any beach activity we fancy. The expanse of sand is considerable, allowing us to find our own space to enjoy, even on days with higher attendance.

The transparency of the water allows us to see the seabed, which is always an indicator of its good environmental health. Being a beach with some natural protection thanks to its rock formations, its waters are usually quite calm, with moderate waves that make it ideal for swimming and enjoyment for the whole family. The water temperature, as is usual in the Cantabrian Sea, is cool but incredibly revitalizing, especially in the summer months. Diving into them is an experience that recharges our energy and refreshes us from the summer heat.

In addition to the sand and water, the predominant type of ground in the bathing area is sand, which guarantees a gentle entry into the sea. However, what truly distinguishes Playa de Illas are its impressive rock formations. These natural monuments, which emerge like small islands or 'illas' in Galician, are the result of marine erosion and offer a unique visual spectacle.
