Introduction
Today we venture into the Mariña Lucense, that coastal strip of Galicia where the green of the land merges with the intense blue of the Cantabrian Sea. And in this magical corner, we want to introduce you to one of those beaches that, without being the most famous, captivate with their serene beauty and welcoming atmosphere: Playa de Portocelo, in the charming municipality of Xove, in the province of Lugo.
When we think of Galician beaches, images of dramatic cliffs and rough waves often come to mind. However, Portocelo offers us a different perspective, a refuge where the coast softens and gifts us a cove of fine, golden sand, bathed by waters that, thanks to its orientation, are usually notably calmer and warmer than in other areas of the coastline. It's a place where time seems to stand still, inviting us to enjoy nature in its purest and most relaxing state. From the moment we set foot on its sand, we feel a special connection with this landscape that combines the exuberance of the surrounding vegetation with the immensity of the sea.
How to Get to Playa de Portocelo
Getting to Playa de Portocelo is relatively straightforward, making it an accessible destination for everyone. If we are coming from the A-8 (Autovía del Cantábrico), the most convenient exit will be the one heading towards Xove or Viveiro. Once on the LU-862 road, which runs along much of the Lugo coast, we must watch for the signs that will lead us directly to Xove. From the center of Xove, access to the beach is well signposted, and a short journey on local roads will leave us very close to our destination.
Access and Parking
The beach has a nearby parking area, which is a great advantage, especially during the summer months. Although it's not a massive parking lot, it usually has enough capacity to accommodate the beach's regular visitors. From the parking area, a well-maintained path leads directly to the sand, making the journey comfortable and suitable for almost all ages. It's not a difficult path, so we can bring our beach chairs, coolers, and other belongings without much difficulty. We always recommend arriving early in the morning during the high season to secure a good parking spot and enjoy the beach with fewer crowds.
The Sand and the Water
One of the biggest attractions of Playa de Portocelo is, without a doubt, its sand. It is fine-grained and of an intense golden color, very pleasant to the touch and perfect for laying out a towel and enjoying a good book or simply for the little ones to build endless sandcastles. The beach's length, about 350 meters, offers enough space for everyone to find their own spot, even on the busiest days.
The waters of Portocelo deserve special mention. Thanks to the configuration of the cove and the natural protection provided by the surrounding rocky promontories, they are usually very calm. This makes it an ideal place for swimming, especially for those who prefer to avoid strong currents or large waves. Furthermore, the water quality is excellent, inviting you to take a dip and enjoy a refreshing swim. The water's transparency allows you to see the sandy bottom, which adds an extra sense of safety and enjoyment, especially for children. It's one of those beaches where you feel safe swimming and where the feeling of cleanliness and purity is constant.
Services and Facilities
Despite maintaining a natural atmosphere and not being overly urbanized, Playa de Portocelo has a series of services that make the stay much more comfortable and pleasant. During the summer season, we will find:

Best Time to Visit
The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Portocelo will largely depend on our preferences. From our experience, we can say that each season has its charm:
- Summer (July and August): Without a doubt, this is the busiest time. If we are looking to enjoy swimming in warmer waters, make the most of beach services like lifeguards and chiringuitos, and feel the summer atmosphere, these months are ideal. Temperatures are pleasant and the long days invite spending hours in the sun. However, this is when we will find the most people.
- Spring (May and June) and early autumn (September): For us, these are the perfect seasons if we are looking for tranquility and to enjoy the beauty of the landscape without crowds. Temperatures are already very pleasant, the days are long, and the sun is warm enough for walks, sunbathing, and, for the bravest, even taking a dip. The vegetation is at its peak in sp
