How to get to Playa de la Sal

Getting to Playa de la Sal in Casares is relatively straightforward, although, as with many coastal treasures, it requires a bit of planning to ensure the best experience. We always recommend the car as the most comfortable and flexible option for exploring this area of the Costa del Sol. From Málaga city, you'll take the A-7 motorway towards Algeciras. The exit for Casares costa or Manilva will leave you just minutes from your destination. The beach is located in the coastal area of Casares, between the popular Playa Ancha and Puerto de la Duquesa.

By car

If you're coming by car, like most of our visitors, the A-7 (Mediterranean Motorway) is your best ally. Once you take the exit for Casares Costa or San Luis de Sabinillas, you'll find signs that will guide you towards the coast. Playa de la Sal is not as built-up as others, which contributes to its charm, but means parking can be a bit more limited in high season. However, there are usually public parking areas or designated spaces nearby, sometimes a bit further from the shore, but accessible with a short walk. We advise arriving early during July and August to secure a good spot.

By public transport

Public transport to get directly to Playa de la Sal is a bit more complicated, as there is no bus stop right on the shore. However, you can take intercity buses from Estepona or San Luis de Sabinillas that will drop you on the main road (A-7) or in a nearby urbanisation. From there, you'll have to walk about ten or fifteen minutes to the beach. Companies like Portillo (now Avanza) operate routes along the coast. If you choose this option, we recommend checking timetables in advance, as frequency can vary considerably outside the high season. For us, the freedom that the car offers to explore this part of Málaga beaches is incomparable.

The sand and water

When we talk about Playa de la Sal, one of the first aspects that comes to mind is the uniqueness of its sand and the quality of its waters. Don't expect the fine golden sands of other latitudes here, but rather a beach with its own character, reflecting the geography of the area and the proximity of the Sierra Bermeja. The sand at Playa de la Sal is of a mixed type, which means you'll find a combination of finer grains with coarser ones, in tones ranging from dark grey to brown, occasionally dotted with small polished stones and shells left by the sea. This texture gives it a peculiar feel underfoot and a special shine when the sun hits it. The entrance to the sea is gentle and gradual, making it a safe and very suitable place for families with young children. There are no steep drops or dangerous currents, which gives us great peace of mind when seeing the little ones splashing near the shore. The water temperature, typical of the Andalusian Mediterranean, is pleasant during the summer months, refreshing in spring and autumn, and always tempting for a dip. The cleanliness of these waters is notable, and often, we can observe small fish swimming near the shore, indicating a healthy marine ecosystem. For diving or snorkelling enthusiasts, although it's not a main dive site, the nearby rocky areas may offer some marine surprises, although visibility can vary.
