How to Get to Playa de la Raja

Getting to Playa de la Raja is, in itself, part of the adventure and charm of this place. Do not expect to find large signs or direct access from a main avenue; its relative discretion is what contributes to its tranquil atmosphere. For us, the best way to get there is by car, heading towards the coastal area of Mazarrón, in the province of Murcia. Using a GPS with the (approximate) coordinates 37.5855, -1.2580 will be your best ally, as it will guide you along the local roads that wind through the landscape.

Car Access and Parking

Once you approach the area, you will find a stretch of track or dirt road that will take you near the cove. It is important to drive with caution, especially if your car is not an off-road vehicle, although it is generally passable. The parking is not a formal lot with marked spaces, but rather an area where vehicles park somewhat improvisedly on the sides of the road or in small natural clearings. Therefore, we recommend arriving early, especially in mid-season, to secure a good spot. From where you leave your car, access to the sand is via a short path, often with a slight slope, which adds that 'wild' touch we love so much. It is a pleasant walk, but it's good to keep it in mind if you are carrying a lot or with people with reduced mobility.

Public Transport

Regarding public transport, we must be honest: Playa de la Raja is not easily accessible by this means. The bus lines operating in Mazarrón usually cover the urban areas and the more popular beaches of Puerto de Mazarrón. To reach this particular cove, you would have to combine a bus to Puerto de Mazarrón and then perhaps a taxi or, if you are adventurous, a good walk. Our recommendation is always your own car or a rental to fully enjoy the flexibility and comfort of exploring these more hidden corners of the Murcian coast.

The Sand and the Water

What first captivates us when stepping onto Playa de la Raja is, without a doubt, its sand and the purity of its waters. It is a sensory experience that immediately transports us to a state of calm and well-being. The sand here is a soft golden hue, fine and pleasant to the touch, ideal for lying down and enjoying the sun or for the little ones to play building sandcastles (although, as we will see, it is not the most family-friendly beach due to its services, it is due to the quality of its sand). Walking barefoot on it is a pleasure, and its texture makes the beach experience even more enjoyable.

The Crystal-Clear Waters

But if the sand is a delight, the water is the true crown jewel of Playa de la Raja. Its waters are of astonishing transparency, with shades ranging from light turquoise at the shore to a deep blue further out. This clarity is largely due to the absence of large infrastructures and the rocky and sandy nature of the seabed, which keeps the water free of turbidity. Immersing yourself in them is a revitalizing sensation, a swim in a true natural paradise. The cove is relatively sheltered, which usually guarantees gentle waves and perfect conditions for a calm and safe swim.

The Seabed and Snorkeling

For snorkeling lovers, the seabed of Playa de la Raja is a small treasure to discover. Beneath the surface, we find areas of sand alternating with rocks covered in Posidonia oceanica, a vital ecosystem that harbors a surprising variety of marine life. With a mask and snorkel, you can observe small colorful fish, anemones, and, if you're lucky, the occasional crustacean. It is an activity we highly recommend, as it adds an extra dimension to your visit and allows you to appreciate the natural richness of this corner of Mazarrón. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is very pleasant, inviting long dips and underwater explorations.

It is essential to understand that Playa de la Raja is a cove that prides itself on its natural and wild character.
