Introduction
From the moment we set foot on Playa de Canelas, in the vibrant municipality of Sanxenxo, we knew we were facing one of those jewels that Galicia guards zealously. This beach, often somewhat overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, offers a perfect balance between the natural beauty of the Pontevedra coast and the comfort of the services every summer visitor seeks. It's a corner where the blue of the Atlantic merges with the golden sand, creating an idyllic setting to disconnect.
For us, Playa de Canelas represents the essence of the Rías Baixas: tranquility, captivating landscapes, and a welcoming atmosphere. It's the ideal place for those seeking a complete beach experience, whether alone, as a couple, or especially with family. We love its atmosphere, which, without being noisy, always has life and joy. It is, without a doubt, a must-stop on any route along the beaches of Sanxenxo.
How to Get to Playa de Canelas
Getting to Playa de Canelas is quite straightforward, which adds to its appeal. It's very close to the urban center of Portonovo and a short distance from Sanxenxo, making access easy from any point in the Salnés region.
By Car
The most comfortable way to get there is undoubtedly by car. From Sanxenxo, we take the PO-308 road towards Portonovo. Before fully entering Portonovo, we'll find well-signposted turnoffs towards the beach. The advantage is that it has several parking areas nearby, some paid during high season, but also free options a bit further away. We always recommend arriving early in the summer months to secure a good spot.
Public Transport
During the summer season, Sanxenxo and Portonovo usually have an urban bus service connecting the main beaches and centers. Although it doesn't have a stop right on the sand, there might be one nearby that leaves us just a few minutes' walk away. It's always a good idea to check updated schedules and routes if we prefer not to use the car.
The Sand and Water
The main calling card of Playa de Canelas is, without a doubt, its sand and waters. The sand is fine and a very pleasant golden tone, perfect for walking barefoot or for the little ones to build sandcastles. We love the feeling underfoot, soft and clean, inviting relaxation and enjoyment of the sun.
The waters of Canelas are another of its great attractions. They are notably crystal-clear and, even better, they are usually very calm, protected from stronger currents by their orientation. This makes them an ideal place for swimming, especially for children and the elderly. The temperature, as is usual on the Galician coast, can be a bit cool at first, but once in, it's wonderfully refreshing on hot summer days. We've spent hours swimming and enjoying the transparency of the sea here.
Services and Facilities
One of the reasons we consider Playa de Canelas so complete is the excellent range of services it offers. This makes it very comfortable and functional for any type of visitor.
- Lifeguard Service: In high season, the beach has a lifeguard service that watches over our safety, which gives us great peace of mind, especially when we go with children.
- Showers and Toilets/WC: We have showers to rinse off the salt and sand before leaving, and also public toilets, always well-maintained.
- Chiringuitos: The classic beach bars are not lacking, where we can enjoy a refreshment, an ice cream, or even a light meal without leaving the sand. The atmosphere in them is always lively and pleasant.
- Sunbed and Umbrella Rental: For those who don't want to carry their own equipment, there's the option to rent umbrellas and sunbeds, adding a plus of comfort.
- Parking: As mentioned, there are several parking options nearby, facilitating access to the beach.
- Children's Area: Often, during the summer, inflatables or water games are set up on the beach, and there are play areas for children in the surroundings, making it a paradise for the little ones.
Best Time to Visit
Although Playa de Canelas is beautiful at any time of the year, there are seasons that, due to their characteristics, we consider ideal for visiting, depending on what we're looking for.
- Summer (June to September): It is, without a doubt, the high season. If we're looking for sun, warmth, all services operational, and a lively atmosphere, this is the time. The waters are warmer (by Galician standards) and the beach buzzes with activity. However, we should expect more crowds, especially in July and August.
- Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October): For us, these are the perfect seasons if what we seek is tranquility and enjoying the beauty of the landscape without crowds. The days are usually sunny and pleasant, ideal for long walks along the shore, reading, or simply relaxing listening to the sea. Many services are still available or starting/ending the season.
- Winter (November to March): Although swimming is not an option for most, winter offers a Playa de Canelas in its wildest and most solitary version. It's an excellent time for photographers, nature lovers, and those seeking absolute peace, enjoying the sound of the waves and the fresh Atlantic air.
