Introduction
If we are looking for a corner of peace and beauty on the Galician coast, Playa de Xiorto in the municipality of Poio, province of Pontevedra, emerges as a charming option. We, as lovers of Spanish beaches, have discovered in Xiorto a small paradise that, although perhaps not as well-known as other beaches in the area, possesses a particular charm that makes it unforgettable. It is one of those hidden gems we love to share, a space where nature and tranquility merge to offer a total disconnection experience.
Strategically located in the Ría de Pontevedra, this beach offers us spectacular views and the protection of its enclave, which translates into generally very calm waters. It is a perfect place to escape the bustle of more crowded beaches and immerse ourselves in the calm that only the Galician coast knows how to offer. Its modest size and serene atmosphere make it an ideal destination for those who value privacy and natural beauty above all else. We firmly believe that Playa de Xiorto is a place worth exploring and enjoying calmly, letting oneself be carried away by the slow pace of the ría.
How to Get to Playa de Xiorto
Getting to Playa de Xiorto is relatively simple, although its more sheltered location means it is not right off a main avenue. We always recommend planning the route in advance, especially if it is our first time in the area. If we are coming from the city of Pontevedra, the journey is short and picturesque, following the PO-308 road towards Sanxenxo. We will need to pay attention to the signs towards the beaches in the Poio area, as Xiorto turns off from the main road.
By Car
The car is, without a doubt, the most comfortable option to access Playa de Xiorto. From Pontevedra, we will take the PO-308. After passing the nucleus of A Caeira and before reaching Combarro, we will find the turn-offs towards the small coves on the Poio coast. We must pay attention to the signs that will guide us to the beach. Parking in the vicinity is usually limited, often in the form of street parking on adjacent roads or in some small designated area. In high season, it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot, so we suggest arriving early to secure a good place. The advantage is that, being a smaller beach, the influx is not as massive as on larger beaches, which makes the search for parking a bit easier.
By Public Transport
Although Playa de Xiorto does not have a bus stop right on the sand, we can get quite close using the lines that connect Pontevedra with the coastal municipalities of Poio and Sanxenxo. We will have to get off at one of the stops closest to the Lourido or Raxó area and, from there, undertake a 15-20 minute walk to the beach. We always advise checking the specific schedules and routes in advance, as these can vary depending on the season. It is a more economical and ecological option, although it requires a bit more physical effort.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Xiorto welcomes us with fine, golden sand, incredibly soft to the touch. It is the kind of sand that invites us to walk barefoot, to build sandcastles with the little ones, or simply to spread out our towel and enjoy the sun. Its uniform texture and the absence of rocks or pebbles on the shore make it very pleasant for all visitors. We always value the quality of the sand, and in Xiorto, the experience is truly pleasant. It is clean, well-maintained sand, a reflection of the respect for the natural environment that characterizes this area of Galicia.
As for the water, we find idyllic conditions. Being protected within the Ría de Pontevedra, the waters of Playa de Xiorto are remarkably calm, with practically non-existent waves. This makes it an exceptionally safe place for swimming, especially for families with young children or for those looking to swim without worries. The transparency of the water is another of its great attractions; on sunny days, we can easily observe the seabed, which is always a plus. The water temperature, as is usual on the beaches of Pontevedra, is cool, but very pleasant and refreshing on hot summer days. We believe that this combination of soft sand and serene waters is what truly defines the relaxing character of Xiorto.
Services and Facilities
Despite its more intimate size, Playa de Xiorto has a series of basic services that help make our stay more comfortable and safe. We always appreciate when a beach, no matter how small, thinks about the needs of its visitors. These services, although not as extensive as those of larger urban beaches, are sufficient to guarantee a pleasant beach day.
Among the services available at Playa de Xiorto, we highlight the following:
