How to Get to Playa de Plakias

Getting to Playa de Plakias is an integral part of the adventure, especially if we are coming from the northern part of Crete. The route itself is a visual spectacle, winding through mountainous landscapes and impressive gorges that prepare us for the coastal beauty that awaits. The most common and flexible way to get there is undoubtedly by rental car. We always recommend this option, as it gives us the freedom to explore at our own pace, stopping at viewpoints or small villages we might otherwise miss, and accessing more remote coves and points of interest.

From the city of Rethymno, the journey to Playa de Plakias is approximately 35 to 40 kilometers, which translates to about 45 to 60 minutes of driving, depending on traffic and how many times we stop to admire the scenery. The main road connecting Rethymno with Plakias is the Epar.Od. Rethymnou-Agias Galinis. It is a well-signposted road, although with quite a few curves as we descend towards the south coast. The landscapes are breathtaking, especially when passing through the famous Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where the cliffs rise majestically and, if we are lucky, we can hear the 'roar' of the wind passing through its narrows. It is an experience we recommend not missing, as it offers spectacular photo opportunities and a first immersion into Crete's unique geography.

If a rental car is not an option for you, don't worry, there are also reliable alternatives. Public buses operated by the KTEL Creta company are an economical and safe way to reach Plakias. There are several daily connections from the Rethymno bus station, especially during the tourist season. Schedules usually vary by season, so we advise checking the KTEL website or asking at the local station in advance to plan your trip. The bus ride is equally picturesque and allows us to relax and enjoy the scenery without the worry of driving, observing Cretan rural life. The bus stop in Plakias is conveniently located in the center of the village, just a few steps from the beach and the main services, making arrival very easy.

For those arriving in Crete by plane, the nearest international airports are Chania International Airport (CHQ) and Heraklion International Airport (HER). From either, the best option is to rent a car directly at the airport for greater convenience and flexibility, or take a bus to Rethymno and, from there, the bus to Plakias. The journey from Heraklion is about 2 hours by car, while from Chania it is a bit longer, around 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. In both cases, the trip is straightforward and well-signposted, with main roads connecting the airports to Rethymno.

Once in Plakias, parking is usually not a problem. There are several free parking areas along the beach and in the streets adjacent to the village. During the months of July and August, which are the busiest, we might have to search a bit more or walk a few extra minutes to our preferred spot on the beach
