Introduction
If there's one Greek island that captivates with its natural beauty, it's undoubtedly Cephalonia. And among its many hidden treasures, Playa de Mega Lakos shines with its own light, offering us a truly unique experience. Located on the fascinating Paliki peninsula, very close to the charming town of Lixouri, this beach stands out from many others among the beaches of Cephalonia due to its sand of a vibrant reddish color, a visual spectacle that takes our breath away from the first moment we step on it.
For us, Playa de Mega Lakos is not just another beach; it's a refuge of calm and serene beauty. Its incredibly clear and shallow waters make it a safe paradise for families with young children, who can splash and play without worries. Unlike other more bustling and well-known beaches, here we find an atmosphere of genuine relaxation, where the gentle murmur of the waves and the sea breeze are the perfect soundtrack for disconnecting from the daily hustle. It's one of those beaches in Greece that reminds us why we love this country so much.
We feel fortunate to have discovered this corner, where nature has painted such a singular canvas. The combination of the red sand with the turquoise blue of the sea creates a hypnotic contrast that invites contemplation and photography. It is, without a doubt, a must-visit for anyone looking for a different and memorable beach experience on the beaches of Cephalonia.
How to Get to Playa de Mega Lakos
Getting to Playa de Mega Lakos is relatively straightforward, although, as is often the case on Greek islands, having your own or a rented vehicle will give us maximum freedom and comfort. The beach is located on the Paliki peninsula, west of Cephalonia, and its closest reference point is the picturesque town of Lixouri.
If we are staying in Argostoli, the island's capital, the fastest and most picturesque way to get to Lixouri is by taking the ferry. This journey, which lasts approximately 20-25 minutes, offers us wonderful views of the bay and saves us a long detour by road. Once in Lixouri, the path to Playa de Mega Lakos is well signposted. We just need to follow the signs south, towards Xi Beach, as Mega Lakos is on the same coast, a little before or after, depending on the direction of arrival. The road is paved and in good condition, facilitating access.
For those who choose to drive from other parts of the island, the trip to the Paliki peninsula will allow us to enjoy rural landscapes and spectacular views. We always recommend carrying a GPS or an updated map, although tourist signage in Cephalonia is usually quite good. Once in the vicinity of the beach, we will find ample parking areas, generally free, allowing us to park comfortably a short distance from the sand. While public transport may be limited for reaching the more secluded beaches directly, buses connect Lixouri with Argostoli, and from Lixouri, a taxi could be an option for those who don't drive. However, to fully explore the beaches of Cephalonia, a car is our best ally.
The Sand and Water
What truly distinguishes Playa de Mega Lakos and makes it one of the most unique beaches in Greece is, certainly, its sand. Let's forget about golden or white sands; here, nature surprises us with a blanket of sand of an intense reddish-orange color. This hue is due to the high concentration of clay in the area's rock, which erodes and mixes with the sand, creating an almost Martian, yet incredibly beautiful, landscape. The sand is fine and soft to the touch, a delight for walking barefoot and for the little ones to build sandcastles with a different touch.
The contrast of this crimson sand with the turquoise and crystalline blue of the sea is simply spectacular. The waters of Playa de Mega Lakos are exceptionally calm, thanks to the protection offered by the bay, and their most notable characteristic is their shallowness. We can walk many meters out to sea and the water will barely cover our waist, making it extremely safe and pleasant, especially for families with young children or for those who enjoy a relaxed swim without worries. The water temperature is usually warm during the summer months, inviting us to spend hours immersed in its coolness.
The clarity of the water allows us to see the sandy bottom easily, and although it is not an ideal beach for snorkeling due to the scarcity of marine life on the sandy bottom, its transparency is perfect for a refreshing swim and for simply enjoying the sensation of the water caressing our skin. The experience of diving into these waters, with the red sand under our feet and the Greek sun above us, is one of those that stays etched in our memory, making this beach in Cephalonia a truly special place.
Services and Facilities
Despite its relaxed and somewhat quieter atmosphere compared to more crowded beaches, Playa de Mega Lakos does not lack the essential services that make our beach day more comfortable and pleasant. We greatly appreciate that, without losing its natural charm, the beach offers the necessary facilities to fully enjoy the day.
On the beach, we will find a good selection of sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent. This is ideal for protecting ourselves from the Mediterranean sun and resting comfortably while we read a book or simply enjoy the sea breeze. The arrangement of these umbrellas is usually spacious, allowing us to maintain a sense of privacy and relaxation. Furthermore, along the shore, there are several chiringuitos*
