How to Get to Playa de Frangokastello

Getting to Playa de Frangokastello is part of the adventure and, although it requires a journey, the route is so scenic that we will greatly enjoy it. Located on the remote southern coast of the Chania region, the most common access is by car. If we fly into Chania International Airport (CHQ) or Heraklion Airport (HER), the most recommended option is to rent a vehicle. From the city of Chania, the journey is approximately 80 kilometers and will take us about 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic and any stops we make to admire the landscape.

The route will take us through picturesque villages and mountainous landscapes, especially if we choose the road that crosses the stunning Imbros or Kotsifou Gorges. Although the roads are generally good, some sections can be winding and narrow, especially when descending towards the southern coast. It's important to drive carefully and enjoy the panoramic views offered by the White Mountains of Crete and the Libyan Sea. There is no direct and frequent public transport to Frangokastello, so a car will give us the freedom to explore the area at our own pace and discover hidden coves in the surroundings. We recommend bringing a GPS or having a map handy, although the signage towards Frangokastello is quite clear once we approach the southern coast.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Frangokastello immediately seduces us with its sand. Here, we find fine, golden sand, incredibly soft to the touch, which stretches along the shore and invites us to walk barefoot or lie down to enjoy the Cretan sun. It's the kind of sand that children love for building castles, and that adults appreciate for its comfort and cleanliness. The predominant type of ground is, unsurprisingly, sand, which facilitates access to the water and guarantees a pleasant experience for everyone.

As for the water, a true spectacle of nature awaits us. The waters of Playa de Frangokastello are of a crystal-clear turquoise color, with a transparency that allows us to easily see the seabed. The most notable feature is its incredible shallowness. We can walk several meters into the sea and the water will barely cover our knees, making it exceptionally safe and perfect for young children or those who are not comfortable in deep water. This characteristic, combined with the absence of strong currents, creates an ideal environment for bathing and play. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is pleasantly warm, inviting us to spend hours splashing and enjoying the sun. Undoubtedly, the quality of the sand and the purity of the water are two of the greatest attractions of this fantastic beach Chania (Crete).

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: On the beach, we find areas where we can rent umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds to protect ourselves from the sun and relax by the sea. This is especially useful in the hot summer months.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Several beach bars and small tavernas are located right on the beach or very close to it. Here we can enjoy refreshments, coffees, ice creams, and, of course, delicious Cretan meals, from fresh salads to grilled fish. It's perfect for a quick lunch or a dinner with sea views.
• Parking: There are free and paid parking areas near the beach, which facilitates access if we arrive by car. Although it can be busy in high season, we generally find space without much trouble.
• Showers: After a refreshing swim, we can rinse off the sea salt at the available showers, a service much appreciated by everyone.
• Toilets/WC: Public toilets are usually available near the chiringuitos or as part of the beach facilities, maintained in acceptable conditions.
• Lifeguards: Since the beach often flies the Blue Flag, it's common to find lifeguard posts, especially during the high season, which adds an extra layer of safety, even though the waters are very calm.
