How to Get to Playa de Kalathas

Getting to Playa de Kalathas is relatively easy, given its proximity to the city of Chania. We, like most visitors, usually opt for a rental car, which gives us the freedom to explore at our own pace. From the center of Chania, the journey takes about 10-15 minutes, following the signs to the Akrotiri peninsula and then turning off towards Kalathas. There is a large free parking lot near the beach, which is a great advantage, especially in high season.

For those who prefer not to drive, there is a public bus service connecting Chania with Kalathas. The frequencies are reasonable during the day, especially in summer, allowing for easy and economical access. Taxis are also a comfortable option, though more expensive. The road to Playa de Kalathas offers panoramic views of the Cretan coast, setting the stage for the beauty that awaits us.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Kalathas captivates us immediately with its spectacular combination of sand and water. The sand here is fine and golden, incredibly soft under our feet, inviting us to walk barefoot along the shore. It's the perfect type of sand for building castles, for children to play, and for simply relaxing in the sun. We don't find annoying rocks in the main swimming area, making it even more attractive.

But what really makes us fall in love with Kalathas is its water. It is of astonishing clarity, with shades ranging from light turquoise to deep blue. Most notable is its shallowness over a considerable area, making it a paradise for the little ones and for those who enjoy a worry-free, tranquil swim. The bay is well protected from the wind, so the waves are minimal, creating an ideal natural pool for swimming and relaxing. It is, without a doubt, one of the most pleasant aquatic experiences we have found on the beaches of Greece.

Playa de Kalathas is a well-organized beach, meaning it has an excellent range of services and facilities designed for our comfort. We greatly appreciate these amenities, as they make our beach day much more enjoyable.

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: Ample areas for rental, ensuring refreshing shade.
• Chiringuitos: Several beachfront chiringuitos and tavernas offer refreshments, coffee, snacks, and light meals.
• Parking: Plentiful and free, a great relief compared to other beaches.
• Showers: To rinse off the salt and sand after a swim.
• Lifeguards: During the high season, they watch over the safety of swimmers.
• Toilets/WC: Clean and accessible facilities near the chiringuitos.
• Restaurants: More complete options for lunch or dinner a short distance away.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the best time to visit Playa de Kalathas is key to fully enjoying it. We highly recommend late spring (late May to early June) and early autumn (September to early October).

During these periods, the climate in Crete is idyllic. The temperatures are warm and pleasant, perfect for sunbathing and swimming, but without the stifling heat of midsummer. Furthermore, the influx of tourists is significantly lower than in July and August. This means we can enjoy the beach with more space, find sunbeds available easily, and experience a more relaxed and authentic atmosphere. Prices also tend to be more competitive.

If our only option is to visit in midsummer (July and August), Playa de Kalathas is still wonderful, but we must be prepared for more people. We advise arriving early in the morning to secure a good spot and enjoy the tranquility before the beach fills up.

Activities and Sports

Although Playa de Kalathas is known for its calm and relaxed atmosphere, it also offers opportunities for various activities and water sports, especially for those who enjoy the sea in a more active way.

Given the clarity and calmness of its waters, snorkeling is a very popular activity here. We always bring our masks and snorkels, as the visibility is excellent and we can observe small fish and marine life near the rocks at the ends of the bay.
