This Greek gem, immortalized by the film 'Zorba the Greek', is not just a beautiful stretch of coastline; it's an experience that etches itself into the soul. The most distinctive feature of Stavros is, without a doubt, its majestic camel-shaped mountain rising protectively over the bay, creating a dramatic and unique backdrop that makes it unmistakable among the beaches of Greece.

We, as beach tourism experts, have explored countless destinations, but Playa de Stavros possesses a particular charm. Its waters are incredibly calm and shallow, almost like a natural swimming pool, making it the perfect place for those seeking peace and, especially, for families with young children. Here, time seems to slow down, inviting us to disconnect, enjoy the Cretan sun, and immerse ourselves in the authentic Mediterranean essence. How to Get to Playa de Stavros

Getting to Playa de Stavros is a simple and rewarding adventure. Located on the Akrotiri peninsula, about 17 kilometers northeast of the city of Chania, there are several transportation options we have tried and can recommend:

By Rental Car

This is, by far, the most comfortable option and the one we always prefer for exploring Crete. It gives us total freedom to stop at viewpoints, visit nearby villages, or simply enjoy the landscape. From Chania, the journey takes approximately 25-30 minutes. The route is well signposted and runs on good roads. Upon arriving in Stavros, you will find ample parking areas, some free and some paid, especially near the chiringuitos. We recommend arriving early in the high season to secure a good spot.

By Public Bus

For those who prefer not to drive, there is a regular bus service from the central bus station in Chania (KTEL Chania) to Stavros. Schedules vary by season, with more frequent service in summer. The trip is economical and offers a chance to observe local life. Although it is a viable option, it is less flexible than a car, especially if you wish to stay until sunset or explore the surrounding area.

By Taxi or Private Transfer

If you seek maximum comfort, a taxi or private transfer from Chania is an excellent choice. The cost is higher than the bus, but it offers door-to-door service and is ideal for small groups or those traveling with a lot of luggage. Hotels can usually arrange these transfers.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Stavros captivates us with the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters, two key elements that distinguish it among the beaches of Greece. The sand is a pale golden hue, incredibly fine and soft to the touch, perfect for walking barefoot or for children to build sandcastles. It is a true pleasure to feel it underfoot as we head towards the sea.

But what truly enchants us are its waters. Stavros Bay is exceptionally well-protected by the peninsula and the imposing mountain, creating a natural swimming pool effect. The sea here is a crystal-clear turquoise blue and, even better, it is extraordinarily shallow for many meters from the shore. This means we can walk and walk without the water covering us, a fantastic feature for the safety of the little ones and for those who simply wish to relax in a serene setting. The absence of strong currents and waves makes swimming always a calm and pleasant experience. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is delightfully warm, inviting us to stay in for hours.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Stavros is a well-organized beach, which means we, as visitors, can enjoy a wide range of services and facilities that make the stay much more comfortable and pleasant. We have found that this attention to detail is often what makes the difference in a beach holiday:

• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: On the beach, you will find extensive areas with straw umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds available for rent. This is ideal for protecting ourselves from the intense Cretan sun and for enjoying a worry-free day of relaxation. Prices are reasonable and managed directly on the beach or through the nearby chiringuitos.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: There are several chiringuitos and tavernas right on the sand or just steps away. Here we can enjoy refreshing drinks, coffees, ice creams, and, of course, delicious dishes of Cretan cuisine. The possibility of having lunch with a sea view is a true luxury. Some of these establishments offer service directly to the sunbeds.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: For our comfort, the beach has freshwater showers where we can rinse off the salt after a swim. There are also clean and well-maintained toilet facilities, a detail we always appreciate, especially when traveling with children.
• Parking: As already mentioned, there are parking areas available, making access easy for those arriving by car. Although it can be busy in high season, we always find a spot, sometimes for a small fee.
• Lifeguard Service: During the summer months, the beach has lifeguard services that watch over the safety of swimmers. This adds an extra layer of peace of mind, especially for families.
