How to Get to Playa de Kalamaki

Getting to Playa de Kalamaki is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite simple. Located on the south coast of the Heraklion regional unit, it is accessible from the capital, the city of Heraklion, in approximately one hour and twenty minutes by car. We recommend renting a car for total freedom of movement and to explore the charming villages and archaeological sites in the surrounding area. The road is well signposted and offers picturesque landscapes along the way.

From Heraklion (city)

If we depart from the city of Heraklion, we will take the Epar.Od. Agias Varvaras-Moiron road heading south, passing through villages like Agia Varvara and Moires. From Moires, the route takes us directly to Kalamaki, which is located a few kilometers west of Matala. The journey is comfortable and allows us to enjoy the beauty of inland Crete.

By public transport

Although a car is the most practical option, it is also possible to get there by bus. There are regular bus services from the Heraklion bus station (KTEL) to Moires, and from there, we can take a taxi or a less frequent local bus to Kalamaki. However, for greater comfort and flexibility, especially if we plan to carry luggage or explore the surroundings, a car is undoubtedly the best choice for visiting the Playa de Kalamaki beach.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Kalamaki is distinguished by its immaculate fine golden sand, which stretches for over two kilometers, merging with the neighboring Kommos beach. Walking barefoot, we feel the softness under our feet, a delight for the senses. This vast expanse offers us ample space to find our own corner of tranquility, even on the busiest summer days. It is the ideal place to build sandcastles, enjoy a game of volleyball, or simply lie down and sunbathe.

The waters of Kalamaki are a spectacle in themselves: crystal clear, of an inviting turquoise blue, and generally shallow near the shore, making them perfect for families with children. The water temperature is pleasant during the summer months, inviting us for a refreshing dip. Although sometimes there can be some wind, especially in the afternoon, which creates small waves that add a touch of fun for bodyboard lovers. There are no annoying rocks in the water, just a soft, sandy seabed that makes swimming and enjoyment easy. It is one of those Heraklion (Crete) beaches that leaves us wanting more.

• Showers and toilets: We have showers to rinse off the salt and sand after a swim, as well as public toilets near the establishments.
• Lifeguards: During the high season, the beach has lifeguard posts that ensure the safety of swimmers, giving us additional peace of mind, especially if we are traveling with children.
• Parking: There are free parking areas along the road bordering the beach, making access easy if we arrive by car.
