Introduction
Welcome to one of the hidden gems of the Aegean, the wonderful Playa de Faros on the enigmatic island of Ikaria, Greece! We, as beach tourism experts, have explored countless coastlines, but this small cove has a particular charm that makes it unforgettable. Located on the eastern part of the island, very close to the airport, Playa de Faros is a true haven of peace and natural beauty, combining the comfort of services with the serenity of a typically Greek landscape.
When we think of Ikaria beaches, images of wild and solitary coves often come to mind, but Faros offers a different experience: an organized, accessible, and perfectly equipped Ikaria beach to guarantee a worry-free day of sun and sea. Its name, 'Faros', which means 'lighthouse' in Greek, evokes the idea of a landmark, and this beach is, without a doubt, a beacon of relaxation for those seeking to disconnect. Its calm and crystal-clear waters, along with its soft golden sand, make it a favorite destination for families with young children, couples looking for a romantic refuge, or solo travelers in search of inspiration.
How to Get to Playa de Faros
Getting to Playa de Faros is surprisingly simple, which adds great appeal to this already charming Playa de Faros. The island of Ikaria has its own domestic airport, Ikaria National Airport (JIK), located just a few kilometers from the beach. For us, this is a great advantage, as it minimizes transfer times and allows us to immerse ourselves in paradise almost immediately after landing. There are regular flights from Athens, and during the high season, also connections with other Greek islands.
If we prefer to travel by sea, which is a very Greek experience, we can take a ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens. The journeys usually last between 7 and 10 hours, depending on intermediate stops, and offer us the chance to enjoy the vast blue of the Aegean Sea. There are also ferry connections with other nearby islands like Samos, Mykonos, and Patmos, making it easy to include Ikaria in an 'island hopping' itinerary. Once at the main port of Agios Kirykos, or in Evdilos, we can rent a car, take a taxi, or use local public transport to reach Faros. From Agios Kirykos, the drive takes approximately 15-20 minutes, following a picturesque coastal road that already gifts us the first spectacular views of the island. The proximity to the airport makes Faros one of the most accessible Ikaria beaches, a key factor for many travelers.
The Sand and Water
We always emphasize the importance of sand and water quality in a beach experience, and Playa de Faros does not disappoint at all. Here, the sand is a soft golden hue and extraordinarily fine, a delight for bare feet. It's the kind of sand that invites building castles, lying under the sun, or simply strolling along the shore, feeling every grain between your toes. The absence of pebbles or rocks on the shore makes it especially comfortable and safe, particularly for the little ones, who can play freely without worrying about tripping.
But if the sand is a strong point, the water is, without a doubt, the undisputed star of this Playa de Faros. Its waters are of astonishing clarity, with shades ranging from turquoise to deep blue, inviting a refreshing and prolonged swim. The transparency is such that we can easily see the seabed, even at several meters depth, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling, although there isn't a great diversity of marine life. What impresses us most is the calmness of its waters. The bay where Playa de Faros is located is sheltered from the prevailing winds, which means the sea is usually calm, almost like a natural pool. This feature is perfect for swimmers of all ages and abilities, and especially reassuring for parents of young children. The water temperature, warm and pleasant during the summer months, perfectly complements the experience, making every dip a true pleasure. It is, undoubtedly, one of the Greece beaches where the water quality is exceptional.
Services and Facilities
One of the aspects we most value about Playa de Faros is the complete range of services and facilities it offers, guaranteeing a comfortable and worry-free stay for all of us. Far from being a pristine and remote cove, Faros is an organized Ikaria beach that has thought of every detail for the enjoyment of its visitors. To start, the beach has a wide availability of sunbeds and umbrellas that we can rent for a modest price. This is ideal for those looking to relax without having to carry their own equipment, ensuring a comfortable spot under the Ikarian sun.
Right behind the sand line, we find several chiringuitos and restaurants serving everything from refreshments and coffees to delicious local meals. Here we can taste Greek specialties, fresh fish of the day, and Mediterranean salads, all with sea views. These establishments also usually have clean and accessible bathrooms/WCs, as well as showers to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home or continuing our exploration. The presence of lifeguards during the high season provides an additional layer of safety, especially important if we are traveling with children. Furthermore, Playa de Faros has a nearby parking area, which facilitates access for those arriving by rental car. For the more active, some of these chiringuitos or rental points
