How to Get to Playa de Chiona

Getting to Playa de Chiona is part of the adventure and, although it requires a bit of planning, the journey is rewarding and allows us to appreciate the unique landscapes of eastern Crete. Generally, the most comfortable way to access this Lasithi beach (Crete) is by car, as public transport in this more remote area of the island is limited. We always recommend renting a vehicle upon arrival at Heraklion or Sitia airport for complete freedom of movement.

If you're coming from Heraklion, the journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, following the coastal road that crosses the northern part of the island. From Sitia, a charming and closer city, the trip is much shorter, about 20 to 30 minutes. You should head east, following signs towards Palekastro. Once in Palekastro, a small village with basic services, the signage to Chiona is quite clear. The road leading directly to the beach is narrow but well-paved, winding through olive groves and small hills. Upon arrival, you'll find informal parking areas under the shade of tamarisks, making access to the sand easy. It's important to drive carefully, enjoying the landscape and panoramic views that open up as we approach the coast. The ease of parking is a big plus, especially during the busier months, although Chiona rarely feels crowded.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Chiona captivates us immediately with its unique combination of sand and water. Here, the sand is predominantly fine, of a pale golden hue that invites walking barefoot and feeling the softness under our feet. Although in some sections we can find small stones or pebbles, most of the shoreline and seabed is sandy, making it very pleasant for swimming and for children to play. We love the feeling of the sand warmed by the sun, perfect for building sandcastles or simply relaxing by spreading out a towel.

But if the sand is a pleasure, the water at Chiona is a true wonder. It's famous for its transparency and turquoise color, which intensifies with the sunlight. The bay is shallow for many meters from the shore, making it an exceptionally safe place for families with young children. We can wade into the sea and still touch the bottom, which gives us great peace of mind while the little ones splash around. The water temperature, especially in the summer months (from June to September), is delightfully warm and refreshing at the same time, inviting long swims and leisurely enjoyment. The water clarity also makes it ideal for snorkeling, allowing us to observe marine life in its natural habitat, even if it's not a coral reef, the sight is always rewarding. The cleanliness and purity of the water are constant, a testament to the natural beauty and care of this Lasithi beach (Crete).

Services and Facilities

Unlike more touristy and developed beaches, Playa de Chiona maintains a more natural and authentic profile, which for us is part of its charm. Don't expect to find massive tourist infrastructure, and that's precisely what we look for in places like this. However, it has the essential services for a comfortable and pleasant stay.

The most notable service at Chiona are its Chiringuitos, which are actually charming traditional Cretan tavernas located right on the beach or very close to it. These establishments offer us the opportunity to enjoy exquisite local cuisine, with fresh fish, Greek salads, and homemade dishes, all with unbeatable sea views. It's the perfect place for a relaxed lunch or to enjoy a refreshing drink while contemplating the landscape. Some of these tavernas also offer sunbed and umbrella rentals on sections of the beach, allowing us to secure a comfortable and shaded spot for the whole day. This is especially useful on the hottest days or if we plan to spend many hours on the beach.

Regarding other facilities, parking is abundant and free, generally in dirt or gravel areas under the shade of tamarisks, which is very convenient. However, it's important to consider that Playa de Chiona usually does not have public showers, well-developed toilets/WCs, or permanent lifeguard services. Therefore, we always recommend being cautious, bringing enough water, and, if possible, basic equipment.
