How to Get to Playa de Kato Zakros

Getting to Playa de Kato Zakros is part of the adventure and, to be honest, the journey itself rewards us with spectacular landscapes. Located at the eastern end of Crete, access requires a bit more planning than other more central beaches, but every kilometer traveled is worth it. We highly recommend renting a car, as it is the most comfortable and flexible way to explore this part of Lasithi (Crete) and its surroundings. From Sitia, one of the region's larger towns, the journey takes about an hour, winding along well-maintained but curvy roads that reveal impressive panoramic views of the mountains and the sea.

Once we leave the main road connecting Sitia with Ierápetra, we'll head towards Zakros. The last stretch, from the village of Zakros down to Kato Zakros, is a scenic road that slowly descends towards the coast, offering us spectacular views of the valley and the bay. It's a memorable descent, with the image of the sea gradually appearing on the horizon, promising the peace we long for. Upon reaching the small settlement of Kato Zakros, we'll easily find free parking areas right behind the beach, which greatly facilitates access and allows us to start enjoying ourselves without worries.

For those who prefer not to drive, there are public transport options, although they are less frequent and may require transfers. KTEL buses connect Sitia with the village of Zakros, but from there to Kato Zakros we will likely need to take a taxi or, if we're adventurous, walk (approximately 7-8 kilometers downhill, not recommended with a lot of luggage or under the midday sun). For this reason, we insist that a rental car is the best option to maximize our experience and explore every corner of this wonderful region of Greece with complete freedom.

The Sand and Water
