We venture into the heart of Crete's south coast, where Koutsounari Beach awaits us like a canvas of tranquility and natural beauty. This extensive stretch of coastline, located in the Lasithi region, is a true refuge for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in the essence of the Mediterranean. With its approximately 4 kilometers in length, the beach offers generous space for everyone, from families with young children to couples looking for an intimate spot to relax.

What distinguishes Koutsounari Beach is its unique combination of dark sand, fine pebbles, and incredibly transparent, calm waters. This mix creates a fascinating contrast with the intense blue of the Libyan Sea, inviting us to spend hours swimming, snorkeling, or simply floating carefree. How to Get to Koutsounari Beach

Getting to Koutsounari Beach is relatively straightforward, and the options vary depending on our starting point and preferences. If we're coming from Heraklion Airport (HER), the drive takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, covering about 90-100 kilometers. From Sitia Airport (JSH), the journey is shorter, around 45 minutes. The road that takes us there, the E75, is of good quality and offers spectacular views as we approach the south coast.

By Car

Undoubtedly, the car is the most comfortable and flexible option to reach Koutsounari Beach and explore its surroundings. It allows us to move at our own pace and discover hidden coves or inland villages. There are several car rental companies at the airports and main cities of Crete. Once in Koutsounari, we find ample free parking areas along the road that borders the beach, as well as specific parking lots next to the chiringuitos and restaurants.

By Bus

For those who prefer public transport, there are regular bus lines from Ierapetra, the nearest and largest town, to Koutsounari. Ierapetra, in turn, is well connected to other major cities in Crete like Heraklion and Sitia. Buses from the KTEL Creta company offer a reliable and affordable service, although schedules may be less frequent, especially outside the high season. It's an excellent option if we plan to stay mainly in the beach area and don't intend to take many distant excursions.

The Sand and Water

Koutsounari Beach surprises us with a distinctive feature: its peculiar mix of dark sand and fine pebbles. Far from Caribbean white sand, here we find a more earthy tone that, under the Cretan sun, takes on golden and coppery hues. This soil composition, which we classify as mixed (sand and pebble), is not only aesthetically interesting but also contributes to the exceptional clarity of its waters. The pebbles help prevent the sand from being stirred up too easily, keeping the sea a stunning turquoise blue with a transparency that invites you to dive in.

The waters of Koutsounari are notably calm and shallow in the first few meters, making it a fantastic choice for families with children. The absence of strong currents and the gentle slope of the seabed allow the little ones to play and swim safely, always under our supervision. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is pleasantly warm, perfect for long swims and enjoying water activities. The cleanliness of the marine environment and the coast is a constant, an aspect reflected in its frequent recognition with the Blue Flag, a seal of quality that assures us of a well-maintained ecosystem and excellent services.

Koutsounari Beach is well-equipped to ensure a comfortable and pleasant experience for all its visitors. Along its extensive kilometers, we find different zones, some more organized and others more wild, but in general, we can count on good infrastructure.

Essential Amenities

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: In the organized sections of the beach, which are the most popular and accessible, we can rent comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas. This is ideal for protecting ourselves from the intense Cretan sun and enjoying a day of relaxation without worries. Prices are usually reasonable and often include service from the nearby chiringuitos.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: Most areas with sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as the beach chiringuitos and restaurants, have showers to rinse off the salt and sand after swimming, and clean, accessible Toilets/WC. This adds great value to our stay, especially if we spend the whole day at the beach.
• Parking: As mentioned, car access is easy and there are ample free parking areas along the road running parallel to the beach, as well as specific parking for the establishments.

Food and Leisure

• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: The gastronomic offer is varied and delicious. Along the beach, we find several chiringuitos and restaurants serving everything from refreshing drinks and snacks to authentic Cretan cuisine dishes. It's a delight to be able to enjoy an iced coffee, a cold beer, or a fresh lunch with views of the Libyan Sea. Many of these establishments offer service directly to our sunbed.
