Far from the hustle and bustle of the more popular Naxos beaches, Lionas is a small, pristine paradise that invited us to completely disconnect. It's one of those Greece beaches that, while it may not appear in all tourist guides, etches itself into the heart of those who visit. Its charm lies precisely in its authenticity and the feeling of having discovered a well-kept secret.

Lionas is not the typical fine-sand beach many are used to; it's a pebble beach that stretches along a protected bay, flanked by majestic rock formations. The small fishing village that accompanies it, with its white houses and tranquil atmosphere, adds a picturesque touch that made us feel as if we had traveled back in time. The turquoise waters, incredibly clear, invite a refreshing swim and exploration of marine life. It's the perfect place for those seeking a more intimate and natural experience on the island of Naxos.

How to Get to Playa de Lionas

Getting to Playa de Lionas is, in itself, part of the adventure and an unforgettable experience. Located on the remote northeast coast of Naxos, the route to this idyllic corner requires patience and a suitable vehicle, preferably a rental car. Starting from Chora (Naxos Town), the journey took us about an hour, covering some 40-45 kilometers. The road is winding and, in some sections, quite narrow, snaking through mountainous landscapes that left us breathless. It's a trip that allowed us to appreciate the stunning rural beauty of Naxos, passing through small traditional villages and centuries-old olive groves.

We strongly recommend driving with caution, especially on tight curves and sections where the road skirts cliffs. However, every kilometer traveled was worth it upon reaching our destination. The signage to Lionas is clear, although it may not be as abundant as in more touristy areas. As we approached, we began to see the bright blue sea in the distance, a sight that filled us with anticipation. Once in the small village, we found informal parking along the road that descends to the beach, right next to the charming tavernas. It's an arrival that, with its touch of adventure, prepared us for the serenity that awaited.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Lionas stands out from many other Naxos beaches due to its particular type of ground. Here you won't find fine golden sand, but a charming mix of pebbles and small stones covering the entire expanse of the bay. At first, this may surprise some, but we found it part of its rustic, natural charm. The pebbles, polished by the constant ebb and flow of the waves, are of different sizes and shades, creating a natural mosaic that fascinated us. We recommend wearing suitable footwear for walking on them, such as water shoes or river sandals, as this will make your experience much more comfortable, both when strolling along the shore and when entering and exiting the water.

But if the ground is pebbly, the water is, without a doubt, the true star of Playa de Lionas. Its waters are of astonishing transparency, with hues ranging from sky blue to deep turquoise, depending on the sunlight. The underwater visibility is exceptional, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling. We spent hours exploring the submerged rocks and observing the small fish swimming peacefully. The water temperature is pleasantly cool, perfect for combating the heat of the Greek summer. Furthermore, being sheltered by the surrounding mountains, the bay is usually quite calm, with gentle waves that barely break on the shore, making it very safe for swimming and enjoying a relaxing dip. The combination of pebbles and crystal-clear water gives Lionas a wild and pristine character that completely captivated us.

Services and Facilities

As one of the Greece beaches that retains its most authentic and less developed character, Playa de Lionas offers limited services and facilities, which, for us, is part of its main appeal. Here you won't find large tourist complexes, umbrella and sunbed rentals, or a multitude of beach bars with loud music. What you will find is genuine hospitality and the essentials to enjoy a quiet day by the sea.

The most notable service at Playa de Lionas are its traditional tavernas, located right at the water's edge. We loved the experience of sitting in one of them, with our feet almost in the sand, enjoying freshly caught fish and other local dishes. These tavernas not only offer delicious food and drink but also usually have toilets/WCs for their customers' use, which is very convenient. Additionally, in the vicinity of the beach and along the access road, it's possible to find informal parking, although we recommend arriving early in the high season to secure a good spot. There are no lifeguards, public showers, or organized sports areas, which underscores the natural and relaxed atmosphere of Lionas. It's a beach for those who value simplicity and natural beauty over modern comforts, and we enjoyed it immensely for that very reason.
