Located on the remote yet charming southeast coast of the island, this hidden gem invites us to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and immerse ourselves in an idyllic landscape. Far from the crowds of the more popular Naxos beaches, Panormos offers an authentic and relaxing experience, where the only predominant sound is the gentle murmur of the waves.
Upon arriving at Panormos, one feels transported to another world. The most distinctive feature of this Naxos beach is its lush grove of palm trees lining the shore, a rarity in the Cyclades and a natural gift that provides much-appreciated shade during the hot summer days. Its waters, of a stunning turquoise blue, are so transparent that they invite you to dive in without a second thought, while its fine, golden sand is perfect for long walks or simply lying down and enjoying the Greek sun. How to Get to Playa de Panormos
Getting to Playa de Panormos is part of the adventure and rewards us with the feeling of having discovered a treasure. Given its location in southeastern Naxos, it is one of the Greece beaches that requires a bit more planning for access, but the journey is picturesque and well worth it.
By Car or Motorbike
The most comfortable and recommended way to get to Panormos is by rental car or motorbike. From Chora, the capital of Naxos, the journey takes approximately an hour and a half. The road takes us through mountainous landscapes and traditional villages in the island's interior, such as Filoti and Apiranthos, before descending towards the east coast. The route is well signposted, although the last few kilometers can be a bit more winding. We always advise driving with caution, enjoying the panoramic views the road offers. Upon reaching the beach, we will find an informal Parking area to leave our vehicle.
By Bus
The public bus service in Naxos is excellent for the more popular beaches on the west coast, but for Panormos, options are very limited or non-existent. There usually isn't a direct regular bus line that reaches this Naxos beach due to its remoteness. If we don't have our own vehicle, an alternative could be to take a bus to a closer village inland and then a taxi, but this option can be costly and less practical. Therefore, if we want to explore Panormos with complete freedom, renting a vehicle is our best bet.
Organized Tours
Some local companies in Naxos offer boat or 4x4 vehicle tours that include a visit to Playa de Panormos as part of a tour of the east coast and the more remote Naxos beaches. This can be an excellent option if we prefer not to drive and want to enjoy the explanations of a local guide.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Panormos captivates us from the first moment with its natural characteristics. The sand here is of a fine and golden type, incredibly soft underfoot, making it perfect for walking barefoot or for children to play in total comfort. We won't find rocks at the shoreline, as the predominant ground type is sand, creating a uniform and pleasant surface.
The waters of Panormos are simply spectacular. Their transparency is astonishing, allowing us to see the seabed clearly even at several meters depth. The color varies from a bright turquoise near the shore to a deeper blue as we go further out. The waters are generally calm, protected from the prevailing winds (the Meltemi) thanks to the bay's orientation. This makes it an ideal place for swimming and relaxing without worries. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, making it very safe, especially for the little ones. It's one of those Greece beaches where one can spend hours enjoying the swim without feeling the passage of time.
Services and Facilities
Unlike some of the more developed Naxos beaches, Playa de Panormos maintains a more rustic and natural charm, which is reflected in the availability of services. However, this doesn't mean we are completely devoid of amenities, but rather that they are integrated more discreetly into the environment.
Among the services we can find, we highlight:
- Chiringuitos: Although there aren't a wide variety of modern beach bars, we will find at least one small local taverna, often family-run, right on the shore or very close by. Here we can enjoy authentic Greek food, fresh fish, and refreshing drinks. These establishments usually also offer some Sun umbrellas and sunbeds for their customers, allowing us to enjoy the beach with greater comfort.
- Parking: As already mentioned, there is an informal Parking area near the beach, which facilitates access if we arrive by car or motorbike. Don't expect an asphalted and organized parking lot, but rather a dirt space to leave our vehicle safely.
- Natural shade: One of the great advantages of Panormos is the presence of a beautiful grove of palm trees. These provide us with generous natural shade, something very valuable on Greece beaches during the summer months. This allows us to spend long hours on the beach without worrying about the scorching sun, which is ideal for relaxation.
