How to Get to Playa de Pali

Getting to Playa de Pali is a fundamental part of the adventure and, as is often the case with hidden gems, requires a small effort that is worth it. Nisyros is a Dodecanese island, which means its main connection to the mainland and other islands is by sea. We recommend planning your trip well to enjoy it to the fullest.

From the Mainland or Major Islands

The most common way to reach Nisyros is by ferry. If you are coming from Athens (Piraeus Port), the journey is long, usually overnight, and operated by companies like Blue Star Ferries. It is an option for those with time who want a more traditional travel experience. However, the most popular and practical route for most travelers is to fly to a nearby island with an international airport, such as Kos or Rhodes, and from there take a ferry or catamaran.

• From Kos: This is, without a doubt, the easiest and most frequent option. From the port of Kardamena in Kos, there are daily ferries, often several times a day, connecting to Mandraki, the capital of Nisyros. The journey usually takes between 1 hour and 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on the type of vessel. There are also options from the main port of Kos, though they are less frequent.
• From Rhodes: There are also ferry connections from Rhodes, but they are less direct and longer than from Kos. They are usually part of broader routes that touch several Dodecanese islands.

• By Bus: There is a local bus service connecting Mandraki with Pali and other villages on the island. Schedules are usually coordinated with ferry arrivals, especially in high season. It is an economical and picturesque way to travel, although schedules can be limited.
• By Taxi: In Mandraki you will find taxis waiting at the port. It is the fastest and most comfortable option, especially if you are traveling with luggage. The journey is short and the fare reasonable.
• Vehicle Rental: For total freedom, we recommend renting a motorbike, scooter, or car in Mandraki. There are several local agencies. With your own vehicle, you will not only get to Pali easily, but you will also be able to explore the rest of the island at your own pace, which is highly recommended for discovering all the Nisyros beaches and their hidden charms.
• On Foot: If you enjoy walking and the weather permits, the route from Mandraki to Pali is a pleasant coastal walk, offering beautiful views of the sea and the volcanic landscape. Allow approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Pali is not an ordinary beach; it is a testament to the volcanic nature of Nisyros, and this is directly reflected in its sand and waters. When we talk about the sand, we find a distinctive feature: it is of a 'mixed' type, predominantly dark volcanic sand, sprinkled with small pebbles and stones. This composition gives it a grayish to blackish tone that, far from detracting from its beauty, gives it a unique and photogenic character, especially under the Greek sun. Walking barefoot, you will feel a particular texture, different from the fine, golden sand of other Greece beaches, but equally pleasant and, in a way, more connected to the earth.

The 'ground type' of the beach is also 'mixed', a combination of sand and pebbles that extends to the shoreline and, in some areas, even underwater. This means that in some spots it can be useful to wear water shoes, although it is not strictly necessary, as the swimming areas are usually comfortable. We greatly appreciate this diversity, as it adds interest to the landscape and constantly reminds us of the island's unique geology.

As for the water, it is, without a doubt, one of the great attractions of Playa de Pali. The Aegean waters here are remarkably clear, clean, and tranquil.
