How to Get to Playa de Kanoni

Getting to Playa de Kanoni is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it's quite straightforward, especially if you're in Gaios. Kanoni is located south of the capital of Paxos, a short distance away. We recommend several options to reach this paradise corner:

By Car or Scooter

The most common and flexible way to explore Paxos is by renting a car or a scooter. From Gaios, take the coastal road heading south, towards Mongonisi. Playa de Kanoni will be signposted or easily identifiable by the presence of a taverna or a small turn-off towards the coast. The journey is short, picturesque, and will allow you to enjoy the island's views. Keep in mind that Parking is usually informal, along the road or in small improvised clearings, so arrive early in high season to secure a good spot.

Walking from Gaios

For hiking lovers and those who prefer to travel on foot, Playa de Kanoni is accessible from Gaios with a pleasant walk. It's approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on your pace. It's an excellent way to soak up the local landscape, the olive groves, and the sea views. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially in the summer months.

Water Taxi or Private Boat

Although less common for Kanoni due to its easy land access, if you're exploring the coasts of Paxos by boat, you can anchor nearby and swim to shore. This option is ideal for those seeking a more exclusive experience and wishing to combine a visit to Kanoni with other coves and the famous Blue Caves of Paxos. There are numerous companies in Gaios that offer small boat rentals without a license, allowing you to be your own captain for a day and discover the Paxos beaches at your own pace.

The Sand and Water

When you set foot on Playa de Kanoni, the first thing you'll notice is the type of ground that characterizes it. Here, you won't find the classic fine, golden sand that many associate with Greek beaches. Instead, Kanoni is a pebble beach, with small, smooth stones, often mixed with some coarser sand. We recommend bringing water shoes or aqua socks, as they will make entering and exiting the sea easier and make your stay more comfortable. The pebbles have the advantage of keeping the water incredibly clear, as sand isn't stirred up when moving.

But if the type of ground is the first thing that catches your attention, the water is, without a doubt, what will take your breath away. The waters of Kanoni are of astonishing transparency, with shades ranging from the lightest aquamarine to deep blue, creating a hypnotic visual spectacle. The water temperature is ideal during the summer months, inviting long swims and underwater exploration. Being a protected cove, the sea is usually calm, making it a safe and pleasant place for swimming and relaxing, even for the youngest members of the family.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Kanoni offers a perfect balance between natural beauty and comfort. While it's not a beach with massive tourist infrastructure, it does have services that will make your visit more pleasant and that we highly value in our explorations of the Paxos beaches:

• Parking: As mentioned, you'll find informal Parking options along the road or in small designated areas near the beach. It's free, but it can fill up during peak hours in July and August.
• Chiringuitos: Often, there is a nearby taverna or Chiringuitos that serve refreshing drinks, snacks, and, in some cases, light meals. These establishments usually have a relaxed atmosphere and are perfect for enjoying local cuisine with sea views. It's common for these same places to also offer umbrella and sunbed rentals.
• Sombrillas y tumbonas: Although it's not a fully organized beach with rows of sunbeds, some of the Chiringuitos or tavernas adjacent to the cove offer rentals of Sombrillas y tumbonas. This will allow you to enjoy the shade and comfort without having to carry your own beach gear. However, there is always space for those who prefer to lay their towel directly on the pebbles.
