How to Get to Playa de Mongonissi

Getting to Playa de Mongonissi is part of the adventure and charm of visiting Paxos. The island itself is mainly accessible by ferry. We usually fly to Corfu (Kerkyra), which has an international airport, and from there take a ferry or hydrofoil to Gaios, the capital of Paxos. The ferry ride is an experience in itself, offering us spectacular views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding islands. It is also possible to take a ferry from Igoumenitsa, on the Greek mainland, a convenient option if we are traveling by car. Once in Gaios, Playa de Mongonissi is a relatively short distance away, south of the town.

From Gaios

From Gaios, we have several options to get to the beach. The most popular and convenient for us is usually renting a car or a scooter. Paxos is a small island and its roads are easy to navigate, although narrow in some places. The drive or scooter ride to Mongonissi takes us just ten minutes, winding through landscapes of olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation. There is parking available near the beach, which makes the visit much easier.

Taxi and Public Transport

Another comfortable alternative is taking a taxi from Gaios. Taxis in Paxos are reliable and will take us directly to our destination without complications. Although there is a local bus service on the island, frequencies can be limited, especially outside the high season. For greater flexibility, we always recommend renting a vehicle. For the more adventurous, or if we are staying nearby, Playa de Mongonissi is also accessible on foot or by bicycle, allowing us to enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings even more.

By Boat

For many visitors, the most picturesque way to reach Mongonissi is by boat. Being the only beach in Paxos accessible by road that also has a dock for boats, it is a popular mooring point. We can rent a small boat in Gaios or join an organized excursion that takes us directly to the bay. Arriving by sea offers us a unique perspective of the Paxos coastline and allows us to appreciate the cove in all its splendor before disembarking on its soft shores. It is an experience that we highly recommend.

The Sand and Water

Stepping onto Playa de Mongonissi, we immediately notice the particularity of its surface. Here, the sand is of a mixed type, a pleasant combination of fine sand and small pebbles polished by the sea. This mix gives it a unique texture, comfortable for walking barefoot and perfect for children to build sandcastles, although with a different touch than purely fine sand beaches. The shoreline area tends to have more pebbles, which soften as we enter the water, where finer sand predominates. The ground type is therefore mixed, offering the best of both worlds.

The waters of this bay are extraordinarily crystal clear and calm, with shades ranging from light turquoise blue to deep emerald. The bay is very well protected, meaning waves are almost non-existent, creating a natural pool ideal for swimming and relaxing. The shallowness of its shores, which extends gradually, makes it especially safe for young children, who can splash and play without worries under our watchful eye.

The water temperature at Mongonissi is generally warm and pleasant during the summer months, inviting us to spend hours immersed in it. Underwater visibility is excellent, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling and discovering the modest marine life that inhabits the bottom. We shouldn't expect spectacular coral reefs, but we might see small fish and perhaps a starfish.
