How to get to Playa de Ammoudi

Getting to Playa de Ammoudi is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it is quite straightforward, especially if we opt for the flexibility of our own or a rental vehicle. From the vibrant city of Rethymno, the drive takes about an hour, a journey that is a visual pleasure in itself. We recommend taking the main road that crosses the spectacular Kourtaliotiko Gorge, an experience in itself that gifts us with imposing rocky landscapes and a feeling of natural grandeur, then turning off towards Plakias. Once in Plakias, you must follow the clear signs that will guide you towards the eastern beaches, Damnoni and, finally, Ammoudi. The road is paved and in good condition for the most part, although the last stretches towards the beach can be a bit narrow and winding, something common on the roads leading to the more pristine coves of the beaches of Greece. Driving with caution and enjoying the scenery is key, allowing us to anticipate the beauty that awaits.

Transport options

Although the car is undoubtedly the most comfortable and flexible option, especially if we wish to explore the surroundings and the hidden gems of the south coast, there are also other alternatives to get there. There are local buses (KTEL) that connect the city of Rethymno with Plakias several times a day. Once in Plakias, which is a well-connected tourist center, we could take a taxi, which will take us directly to Ammoudi in a few minutes. For the more adventurous and hiking lovers, there is the possibility of walking about 30-40 minutes along a coastal path from Plakias, which will not only keep us active but also gift us with spectacular views of the coast and the Aegean Sea, with opportunities to discover secret coves. However, for optimal comfort and to make the most of our time at Playa de Ammoudi, a private or rental car is undoubtedly the best choice. We mention that the parking, although not huge, usually has enough space, especially if we arrive early in the morning or outside the peak midday hours, when the influx is greater.
