How to Get to Playa de Pythagoreio

Getting to the Playa de Pythagoreio is relatively straightforward, given the excellent connectivity of the island of Samos. We recommend planning the trip in advance to ensure a hassle-free experience.

By Plane

The most direct way to reach Samos from most European countries is to fly to Samos International Airport (SMI), also known as Aristarchos of Samos Airport. This airport is conveniently located just about 3 kilometers from Pythagoreio, which means that in a short taxi ride (about 5-10 minutes) or local bus (if schedules align), we will already be at our destination. Many charter and low-cost airlines offer direct flights during the high summer season, while year-round there are connections via Athens with flights from Aegean Airlines or Olympic Air.

By Ferry

For those who prefer a more scenic route or are traveling from other Greek islands or the mainland, the ferry is an excellent option. Samos's main port, Vathy (also known as Samos Town), receives ferries from Piraeus (Athens) and other Aegean islands like Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, or Patmos. From Vathy, Pythagoreio is about 15 kilometers away and can be easily reached by public bus, taxi, or rental car. There are also ferries that arrive directly at the port of Karlovasi, on the opposite side of the island, from where the journey to Pythagoreio is a bit longer, approximately 30 kilometers.

By Rental Car or Taxi

Once on Samos, whether at the airport or one of the ports, the most comfortable option to get to the Playa de Pythagoreio and to explore the island at our own pace is to rent a car. There are several car rental agencies at the airport and in the main towns. The road connecting the airport to Pythagoreio is short and well-signposted. Alternatively, taxis are available at the airport and ports, offering a quick and direct service to the beach or our accommodation in the area.

The Sand and Water

The sensory experience at the Playa de Pythagoreio is one of its greatest attractions. We were fascinated by the uniqueness of its composition and the purity of its waters.

A Bed of Pebbles and Mixed Sand

Unlike many fine-sand beaches we find in other destinations, the Playa de Pythagoreio is characterized by a mix of small pebbles and coarse sand. This combination gives it a particular texture underfoot, which we found very pleasant. The pebbles are smooth and rounded by the action of the sea, offering a natural massage when walking. Furthermore, this composition has the advantage that the sand does not stick as much to the skin and towels, making cleaning easier at the end of the day. It is advisable to wear water shoes if we have sensitive feet, although many prefer to feel the natural texture of the beach.

Crystal-Clear and Calm Waters

But what really captivated us about the Playa de Pythagoreio were its waters. They are of astonishing clarity, so transparent that we can see the seabed with total clarity even at several meters depth. This characteristic, along with the absence of strong currents and the fact that the slope for entering the sea is gentle and gradual, makes it an ideal place for swimming and snorkeling. The waters are usually calm, somewhat protected by the bay, making them perfect for families with children and for those seeking a relaxing swim. The water temperature, especially during the summer months, is delightfully warm and refreshing at the same time, inviting us to spend hours immersed in this blue paradise. The water quality is so high that the beach often proudly displays the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies its environmental excellence and services.
