How to Get to Playa de Megalo Livadi

Getting to Playa de Megalo Livadi is part of the adventure and charm of visiting it. Serifos is a Cycladic island, so the first step is to fly to Athens and then take a ferry from the port of Piraeus to Livadi, the main port of Serifos. Ferry journeys usually take between 2 and 5 hours, depending on the type of vessel (conventional or high-speed), and offer spectacular views of the Aegean and other islands.

Once in Livadi, we have several options to get to Megalo Livadi. The most recommended is to rent a car or a scooter, which gives us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace. The road to the beach is paved, although with some curves typical of Greek islands, and the journey takes approximately 20-25 minutes from Livadi. There is also a bus service connecting Livadi with Megalo Livadi, although with more limited schedules, especially outside the high season. Whatever the means of transport, the journey rewards us with arid and beautiful landscapes, dotted with small churches and traditional villages, anticipating the beauty that awaits us at this Serifos beach.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Megalo Livadi welcomes us with an extensive stretch of fine, golden sand, a true pleasure for the feet. It is the kind of sand that slips between the toes, inviting us to walk barefoot along the shore and enjoy its softness under the Greek sun. Unlike other Greece beaches that may have pebbles or rocks, here the sand is the star, making it ideal for laying out a towel and spending hours relaxing.

But if the sand is a delight, the water is simply spectacular. Although Playa de Megalo Livadi maintains a fairly natural and relaxed atmosphere, it has the essential services that make our stay comfortable and pleasant. Being a beach with some history and a small settlement, we find some traditional tavernas right on the shore. These restaurants not only offer delicious local dishes, but in many cases also provide umbrellas and sunbeds for their customers, allowing us to enjoy the shade and comfort without having to carry our own equipment. The possibility of enjoying a fresh and authentic meal just steps from the sea is a big plus.

Parking is another important facility we find at Playa de Megalo Livadi. Given its relative distance from the main port, most visitors arrive by private vehicle, and there are designated areas for parking without major issues, which is very convenient. While it is not a beach with massive tourist infrastructure, the presence of these tavernas and the easy access for vehicles ensure our experience is pleasant and worry-free. Do not expect public showers or lifeguards, as the beach focuses more on relaxation tourism and connection with nature, but the basic services are more than covered for a Serifos beach of this type.

Best Time to Visit

For us, Playa de Megalo Livadi and, in general, the island of Serifos, shine with their maximum splendor during late spring and early autumn. Specifically, the months of May, June, September, and early October are ideal. During these times, the weather is gloriously sunny and warm, but the temperatures are milder and more pleasant than in the peak of summer, perfect for enjoying the sun without discomfort. Furthermore, the influx of tourists is considerably lower, allowing us to experience the tranquility and authenticity of the beach and the island to the fullest. We can find a spot on the sand easily, the tavernas are less crowded, and the general atmosphere is one of absolute peace.
