How to Get to Playa de Atsitsa

Getting to Playa de Atsitsa is part of the adventure and charm of this corner of Skyros. Located on the west coast of the island, it's not a beach easily accessible on foot from the main town, Chora. From the capital, Skyros Town (also known as Chora), the journey by car or motorbike is approximately 15 to 20 kilometers, which translates to about 25-35 minutes of driving, depending on the pace and stops to enjoy the views. We always recommend renting a vehicle, either a car or a scooter, to explore the island at your own pace and reach special places like Atsitsa. Public transport on Skyros is limited and doesn't go directly to all the more remote beaches.

The road leading to Atsitsa from Chora is mostly paved and in good condition, although it can be a bit winding in some sections, snaking through landscapes of hills covered in pines and olive trees. It's a scenic journey in itself, with occasional views of the Aegean Sea that hint at the beauty awaiting us. As we approach the beach, we'll find signs to guide us. There are informal parking areas just before reaching the beach, especially near the local taverna, where we can leave our vehicle without major issues. Accessibility is good, allowing us to enjoy the journey as much as the final destination.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Atsitsa welcomes us with a combination of elements that make it distinctive. Don't expect a vast expanse of fine golden sand, like other more famous beaches Greece offers. Here, the ground is a charming mix of small sea-polished pebbles and coarser sand, with tones ranging from light gray to beige. This combination, which we classify as 'mixed,' gives it a rustic and natural character, very much in tune with the pristine surroundings of the area. Walking barefoot on it is a pleasant experience, and the pebbles are perfect for children to search for marine treasures or build small towers.

But if the sand and pebbles are special, the water at Atsitsa is simply sublime. It's famous for being incredibly crystal clear and of a turquoise blue that invites us to dive in without hesitation. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, making it an ideal spot for families with young children, as they can splash safely in the shallow shores. Furthermore, the waters are usually very calm, protected from the prevailing winds, making it perfect for swimming, floating, and simply relaxing. Underwater visibility is excellent, inviting us to snorkel and discover the marine life hidden among the rocks and the small pier. And, of course, we also highlight the most iconic element: the pines that extend to the shore, offering natural and cool shade, a luxury few beaches can boast.

Services and Facilities

One of the great attractions of Playa de Atsitsa is its relatively pristine character and its integration with nature. This means you won't find massive tourist infrastructure here, which is precisely what many of us seek. The services and facilities are limited but sufficient to enjoy a relaxed and comfortable beach day. The crown jewel in terms of services is undoubtedly the famous local taverna, often simply known as 'Atsitsa Taverna,' located right next to the beach. This taverna is much more than a place to eat; it acts as the nerve center of the beach.

At the taverna, we can enjoy delicious dishes of traditional Greek cuisine and fresh seafood, accompanied by a refreshing drink. It's an improvised 'chiringuito' in the best sense of the word, where homemade food and a cozy atmosphere are the norm. Additionally, the taverna often offers sunbeds and umbrellas for its customers, allowing us to relax comfortably under the sun. In its vicinity, we'll also find informal parking areas to leave our vehicle. Although there are no official public showers, the taverna may have some basic option for rinsing off the salt.
