How to Get to Playa de Kareflou

Getting to Playa de Kareflou is part of the adventure and charm of discovering Skyros. First, we must reach the island. The most common way is by taking a ferry from the port of Kymi, on the island of Evia, which is connected by road to Athens. The ferry ride to Linaria, the main port of Skyros, is picturesque and usually takes about an hour and a half. Once on Skyros, mobility is key to exploring its corners.

From Linaria or from the capital, Chora, the best option to get to Playa de Kareflou is to rent a car or a motorbike. The roads on Skyros are generally good, although some tracks to more remote beaches, like Kareflou, may be dirt or gravel on their final stretches. The beach is located in the southern part of the island, and although it is not excessively far from the main centers, having your own vehicle will give us the freedom to explore at our own pace and comfortably access this peaceful corner. Do not expect regular public transport that drops us off directly on the sand; autonomy is our best ally to fully enjoy this destination.

The Sand and Water

As we approach the shore of Playa de Kareflou, the first thing that captivates us is the incredible transparency of its waters. The Aegean Sea here is a turquoise and emerald color that instantly invites a dip. The clarity is such that we can easily see the seabed, even several meters deep, making snorkeling a delight. The water temperature, especially during the summer months, is pleasantly warm, perfect for long swims and for cooling off from the Greek sun.

Regarding the beach's composition, Kareflou features a mixed type of ground, with mixed sand that combines fine grains of sand with small pebbles and sea-polished stones. This mix gives it a unique and natural character. Walking barefoot along the shore is a pleasant tactile experience, and the presence of the small stones contributes to the purity of the water, as not as much sand is stirred up as on other beaches. The access to the sea is gentle and gradual, making it comfortable for all bathers, even for the little ones, although always under supervision. It is, without a doubt, one of those Skyros beaches where the quality of the water is the undisputed protagonist.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Kareflou is distinguished by its natural and relatively pristine atmosphere, which translates into a fairly limited offering of services and facilities, but precisely that is part of its charm. If you are looking for a beach with all the comforts of a resort, this is not your place. However, for those who value authenticity and tranquility, Kareflou offers the essentials for a relaxing beach day.

On the beach itself, or very close to it, it is possible to find a small taverna or 'restaurant' where we can enjoy a refreshing drink or a light bite, often with local and homemade products. These are usually family-run initiatives that, on occasion, also offer some sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, although do not expect a large number. The 'parking' is informal, generally along the access road, where we leave our vehicle for free. There are no public showers or permanent toilets, and there is also no lifeguard service, so caution is essential, especially if we are with children. The philosophy here is 'bring what you need and take away what you brought,' keeping the environment as pristine as we found it. It is one of the Greece beaches that invites us to reconnect with nature in its purest state.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Kareflou in Skyros will largely depend on our personal preferences regarding climate and crowds. However, we can say that the island of Skyros, and therefore Kareflou, offers distinct charms in each season.

For us, spring (late April to early June) and autumn (September and October) are the ideal seasons. During spring, the island is in full bloom, the landscapes are green and vibrant, and the temperatures are mild and pleasant, perfect for exploring and enjoying the beach without the intense summer heat. The sea is already warm enough for swimming, and the crowds are minimal, allowing us to enjoy Kareflou at its peak of peace and serenity. In autumn, the sea retains the summer's warmth, the weather remains sunny but cooler, and the island regains its tranquility after the high season. Accommodation and ferry prices are also usually more attractive during these times.
