How to Get to Playa de Pedi

Getting to Playa de Pedi is part of the adventure and charm of Symi. First, we must reach the island of Symi. The most common way is by ferry or catamaran from Rhodes, which is the largest transport hub in the Dodecanese. Trips are frequent and offer spectacular views of the Aegean Sea.

Once we arrive at Symi's main port, Gialos, we have several options to get to Pedi, which is about 2-3 kilometers away:

By Local Bus

• Frequency: Buses are quite regular during the high season (every hour or half hour, depending on the time of day). The stop is located near the main pier in Gialos.
• Duration: The journey is short, just about 10-15 minutes, and takes us along a winding road with panoramic views of the port and the sea.
• Comfort: It's an economical and comfortable option, ideal for avoiding the heat of a walk.

By Taxi

• Availability: There are taxis waiting at the port of Gialos. It's the fastest and most direct option.
• Price: A bit more expensive than the bus, but convenient if we are traveling with a lot of luggage or in a group.
• Advantage: It drops us off right at the beach or at our accommodation in Pedi.

Walking

• Route: For hiking enthusiasts, there is a pleasant walk from Gialos to Pedi. We follow the main road that climbs from the port and then descends towards Pedi Bay.
• Duration: Approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on our pace.
• Views: It offers impressive views of Symi port from above and of Pedi Bay as we approach. It's an excellent way to appreciate the island's topography.

By 'Sea Taxi' or Local Boat

• From Pedi to other beaches: Although it's not the main way to get to Pedi from Gialos, from Pedi Bay we can take small boats ('sea taxis') that take us to other more isolated beaches of Symi, like Agia Marina or Agios Nikolaos. It's a fantastic option for exploring the surrounding coast and discovering hidden coves.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Pedi, the experience of its sand and waters is, without a doubt, one of its greatest attractions. Let's not expect a vast expanse of fine golden sand, like those we might find in other parts of the Mediterranean. Here, nature presents itself in a more rustic and authentic form, which contributes to its unique charm.

Type of Sand and Ground

Playa de Pedi is characterized by having a mixed sand type. This means we will find a combination of:

• Coarse sand: Mainly in the area closest to the shore and in the submerged part, which makes walking and settling towels easier.
• Pebbles and small stones: Especially at the ends of the beach and in some sections. These stones, polished by the sea, add a natural touch and contribute to the clarity of the water. It's advisable to bring water shoes, especially for children or those with more sensitive feet, although they are not strictly necessary to enjoy the beach.

The Waters of Pedi

What really makes us fall in love with Playa de Pedi are its waters. They are simply spectacular:

• Crystal clear and transparent: The clarity of the water is astonishing. We can see the seabed easily, even at several meters depth. This is partly due to the composition of the ground and the absence of strong currents that stir up sediment.
• Calm and shallow: The bay is very protected from the prevailing winds, which makes its waters exceptionally calm. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, with a gentle slope, making it an ideal place for families with young children. The little ones can splash safely, and adults can relax knowing the conditions are optimal.
• Pleasant temperature: During the summer months, the water temperature is warm and very inviting, perfect for long swims and refreshing dips.
