Located on the south coast of this beautiful Aegean island, Potos is not just a beach, it is a destination in itself. We have visited it on multiple occasions and it always surprises us with its contagious energy and its ability to offer both relaxation and fun.
Playa de Potos has earned its reputation as one of the most popular and beloved Thassos beaches. Its crystal-clear waters, golden sand, and, above all, its vibrant promenade, full of chiringuitos, tavernas, and shops, make it the ideal place for all types of travelers. Whether you're looking for a quiet day under the sun, an afternoon of water sports, or a lively night, Potos has something for you. We love how it combines natural beauty with excellent tourist infrastructure, making every visit comfortable and memorable.
This corner of Thassos is a true magnet for families, couples, and groups of friends looking for a complete beach experience. The ease of access, the safety of its shallow waters, and the wide range of services make Potos a great choice for an unforgettable vacation in Greece. It is certainly one of the jewels that make us return again and again to the beaches of Greece.
How to Get to Playa de Potos
Getting to Playa de Potos is relatively easy, given its popularity and excellent location in the south of the island of Thassos. We always recommend renting a car to explore the island at your own pace, and Potos is an excellent starting point for that. From the main port of Limenas (the capital of Thassos), the distance is approximately 45 kilometers, which translates into a journey of about 50 minutes to 1 hour by car, depending on traffic and any stops you make to admire the landscape.
If you arrive in Thassos via the port of Skala Prinos, the journey is a bit shorter, around 30 kilometers, which takes about 35-40 minutes. The roads in Thassos are usually in good condition, although they can be a bit winding in some mountainous areas. Once you approach Potos, you will find clear signs and several parking options, both free on adjacent streets and paid in private parking lots, especially during high season.
For those who prefer not to drive, there are public buses from the KTEL Thassos company that connect Potos with Limenas and other important villages on the island. The schedules are quite regular during the summer, although it is always advisable to check them in advance. Taxis are also a comfortable, though more expensive, option to get directly to the beach from any point on the island. Whatever your choice, the trip to Playa de Potos is part of the adventure and offers spectacular views of the island landscape.
The Sand and the Water
Playa de Potos captivates us with the quality of its sand and the transparency of its waters, elements that make it so attractive to all visitors. The beach is mainly composed of fine golden sand, although in some areas, especially near the shore or at the ends, it mixes with small pebbles polished by the sea. It is a soft and pleasant sand to walk on barefoot, perfect for building sandcastles or simply lying down to sunbathe.
But what we really fall in love with at Potos is its waters. They are an intense turquoise color, exceptionally clean, and with an amazing clarity that allows you to see the seabed even at some depth. This is, in part, thanks to the fact that Playa de Potos proudly flies the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies high water quality, environmental management, and safety. The entrance to the sea is very gradual and shallow for many meters, making it a fantastic choice for families with young children and for those who do not feel very confident swimming in deep water.
The calmness of its waters, protected from large waves, makes it ideal for countless water activities. We love simply floating and letting ourselves be carried by the calm of the Aegean, or exploring with a snorkel mask the marine life hidden beneath the surface. The combination of soft sand and crystal-clear water creates an idyllic atmosphere for relaxation and enjoyment, cementing Potos as one of our favorite Greece beaches for a refreshing and safe swim.
Services and Facilities
What sets Playa de Potos apart and makes it such a comfortable and desirable destination is the vast range of services and facilities it offers. Here, we find everything needed to enjoy a worry-free day at the beach. From the moment you arrive, the organization is evident, contributing to a pleasant experience for everyone.
Along most of the beach, we can comfortably rent umbrellas and sunbeds for a reasonable price, ensuring us a prime spot under the sun and greater comfort. These areas are usually managed by the numerous chiringuitos and tavernas that line the promenade, offering refreshing drinks, snacks, and, of course, delicious Greek cuisine right on the beach. It's a pleasure to be able to enjoy a coffee or a cocktail without having to go far from the shore.
Hygiene and comfort are also priorities. In Potos, we find showers to rinse off the salt and sand after swimming, as well as clean and well-maintained changing rooms and toilets/WCs in most establishments. For our peace of mind, especially during high season, the beach has lifeguard services, ensuring the safety of swimmers. Furthermore, the availability of parking, although sometimes crowded, facilitates access by car. Many of the ne
