How to Get to Playa de Gerakas

Getting to Playa de Gerakas is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite straightforward. Located on the Vasilikos peninsula, at the southeastern tip of the island of Zakynthos, the beach is well signposted from the main points. If we are coming from the capital, Zante Town, the drive usually takes about 20-30 minutes, along a scenic road that winds through olive groves and small villages. The distance is approximately 15-18 kilometers.

Transport Options

• Rental Car: This is the most recommended option, as it gives us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace. We will find ample free parking at the end of the road leading to the beach, although it can fill up in high season. From the parking lot, a short walk will take us directly to the sand.
• Bus: During the peak summer season, there are bus services (KTEL) connecting Zante Town with the Vasilikos area and its beaches. However, frequencies may be limited and the stop may not leave us right at the beach entrance, requiring an additional walk. We recommend checking the updated schedules.
• Taxi: Another comfortable, though more expensive, option. We can take a taxi from anywhere on the island. The price from Zante Town is around 25-35 euros, depending on the season and negotiation.

The Sand and Water

We are faced with one of the most captivating features of Playa de Gerakas: its sand and waters. The sand is an intense golden color, extremely fine and soft to the touch, making it perfect for walking barefoot and for children to play building sandcastles. It is a sandy beach entirely, without rocks or pebbles to bother when stepping or entering the sea.

The waters are simply spectacular. Of a crystal-clear turquoise hue, they are notably shallow at the shore, gradually extending inland. This characteristic makes it an exceptionally safe place for swimming, especially for the little ones or for those who are not comfortable in deep water. The water temperature is generally warm during the summer months, inviting us to dive in and enjoy a refreshing swim at any time. The transparency is such that we can easily see the sandy bottom and, sometimes, even small fish swimming around us. It is the perfect picture of a postcard Zakynthos beach.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Gerakas is known for being a protected beach due to its importance as a nesting area for Caretta Caretta turtles. This means that services and facilities are present, but are more limited and managed with a focus on environmental conservation. However, we will not lack the essentials to enjoy a day at the beach.

Among the services we can find, we highlight:

• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: One part of the beach has a limited number of sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent. It is important to remember that these are removed at the end of the day so as not to interfere with the turtles' nesting process at night.
• Beach Bars (Chiringuitos): There are no large complexes or restaurants directly on the sand, but we will find one or two small beach bars or snack bars at the top of the beach or very close by, where we can buy cold drinks, ice creams, and some snacks. For more complete meals, there are traditional tavernas a short distance away in the Vasilikos area.
• Lifeguard Service: During the high season, the beach has a lifeguard service, which increases safety for all swimmers.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: Basic shower and toilet facilities are available, usually near the parking area or at the beach entrance.
• Parking: As mentioned, there is ample free parking at the top of the beach, making car access easy.
