Introduction
Welcome to one of Malta's most magical corners! When we talk about Playa de Paradise Bay in Mellieħa, we are describing a true earthly paradise, a name that fits it perfectly. It is a well-known jewel that captivates us with its golden sand, turquoise waters, and serene atmosphere. Located at the northern tip of the island, very close to the Cirkewwa harbour, from where ferries depart for Gozo and Comino, this beach offers us a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle, inviting us to immerse ourselves in tranquility and natural beauty.
From the moment we glimpse this cove from the winding road that descends towards it, we know we have arrived at a special place. The panoramic views are simply spectacular, with the Mediterranean Sea stretching to the horizon and the neighbouring islands of Gozo and Comino outlined in the distance. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where stress dissipates with each wave that gently breaks on the shore. If you are looking for one of the most charming Mellieħa beaches to relax, swim, and enjoy the Maltese sun, you have found your ideal destination. We, as beach tourism experts, do not hesitate to recommend it as an essential experience on your trip to Malta.
How to Get to Playa de Paradise Bay
Getting to Playa de Paradise Bay is part of the adventure. We are in the north of the island, in the municipality of Mellieħa, very close to Cirkewwa harbour. Here we explain the best ways to get there:
By Car
For us, the most comfortable option is usually the car. From Valletta, the journey takes about 45-60 minutes. We must head north, following the signs towards Cirkewwa. Before reaching the harbour, we will find the signs to turn off towards Paradise Bay. The road is a bit narrow and winding at the end. There is a (often paid) car park at the top and a smaller one below. Keep in mind that, once parked, there is a series of steps and a steep path we must descend to reach the sand, which can be a challenge for people with reduced mobility or families with baby strollers.
By Bus
We can take any of the bus lines heading to Cirkewwa (for example, numbers 41, 42, 101, 221, 222). The stop closest to Paradise Bay is called 'Paradise' or 'Cirkewwa'. From there, we will have to walk about 10-15 minutes along the road that descends to the beach. It is a pleasant walk with spectacular views, but remember to wear comfortable shoes and sun protection.
The Sand and Water
When stepping onto Playa de Paradise Bay, the first thing that captivates us is its splendid sand. It is fine, golden sand, incredibly soft underfoot, inviting us to lie down and enjoy the Maltese sun. Unlike other Mellieħa beaches that may have rocky areas, here the predominant ground type is sand, making it very comfortable for walking barefoot or for children to play without worries.
But if the sand is a delight, the water is simply magical. The waters of Paradise Bay are famous for their transparency and amazing turquoise colour. They are incredibly crystal-clear, allowing us to see the seabed easily, making it an ideal spot for snorkelling. Furthermore, the sea is usually very calm in this protected cove, with a gradual entry that remains shallow for several metres, making it perfect for safe swimming, even for the little ones. We love diving into these waters, feeling them envelop us and simply floating, contemplating the stunning landscape around us.
Services and Facilities
Despite its appearance as a remote cove, Playa de Paradise Bay is surprisingly well-equipped with a range of services that make our visit much more comfortable and enjoyable. We greatly appreciate that such a beautiful beach does not sacrifice functionality:
- Sunbeds and umbrellas: Available for rent from spring to autumn. We recommend arriving early in the high season.
- Chiringuitos and Restaurants: The 'Paradise Bay Beach Club' offers drinks, snacks, and meals, perfect for a quick lunch or a drink with a view.
- Showers and Toilets/WC: Clean and accessible facilities for our comfort.
- Lifeguard: Service available during the summer months, for greater safety.
- Parking: Parking options, although they may be paid and fill up quickly in high season.
- Equipment Rental: We can rent kayaks, paddleboards, or snorkelling gear to explore the cove.
Best Time to Visit
Malta enjoys an enviable Mediterranean climate. For us, there are key times to fully enjoy Playa de Paradise Bay and Mellieħa beaches in general:
- Spring (April - June): Pleasant temperatures (20°C-28°C), warm water, and fewer tourists than in summer. Nature is in full bloom.
- Autumn (September - October): The crowds diminish, but the sea temperatures remain delightful. Mild climate and sunny days, ideal for relaxation.
- Summer (July - August): High season, hot (over 30°C) and crowded. If we come in summer, we recommend arriving very early to secure a good spot and enjoy the cooler hours.
