How to Get to Playa Tenacatita

Getting to Playa Tenacatita is part of the adventure and gradually introduces us to its relaxed atmosphere. Generally, the most comfortable way to access it is by car, as it gives us the flexibility to explore at our own pace. If we're coming from the north, like Puerto Vallarta, or from the south, like Manzanillo, we'll take Federal Highway 200, a scenic route that winds along the coast of Jalisco. Approximately 10 kilometers north of La Manzanilla, or about 40 kilometers south of Melaque, we'll find the signposted turnoff to Tenacatita.

Once we take the turnoff, we'll venture onto a rural road that, although it may have some unpaved sections, offers spectacular views of the landscape. It's important to drive carefully, especially if it has rained recently. The journey from the main highway to the beach is a few kilometers, and at the end of this road, the stunning bay will open up before our eyes. There is no direct public transportation to the beach, so a private vehicle or a taxi from one of the nearby towns (like La Manzanilla or Barra de Navidad) are the best options to fully enjoy the experience without logistical worries. We always recommend carrying an updated map or GPS, although the signage is generally clear once we're near the area.

The Sand and Water

The sand of Playa Tenacatita is undoubtedly one of its most attractive features. On the beach, we'll find numerous chiringuitos and palapas that offer us shade, tables and chairs, and, of course, a delicious gastronomic offering. These establishments are usually family-run businesses, where Mexican hospitality is evident in every detail.

Regarding facilities, most chiringuitos have basic bathrooms/WCs for their customers' use. It's also common for them to offer umbrellas and sun loungers for rent, allowing us to enjoy the shade and comfort without having to carry our own equipment. For those arriving by car, there are informal parking areas, generally managed by the same establishments or the local community, where we can leave our vehicle safely for a modest fee.

Furthermore, during the high season and on weekends, it's possible to find lifeguards watching over the beach, which adds an extra layer of safety, especially for families with children. And for adventure lovers, several local operators offer equipment rental such as kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkeling gear, allowing us to easily explore the bay and its nearby reefs.
