We, as lovers of beaches and adventure, have found in Xcacel a refuge, a reminder of what true disconnection and respect for the environment mean.

This paradise corner is mainly known for being one of the most important nesting sites for sea turtles in the Mexican Caribbean. How to Get to Playa Xcacel

Getting to Playa Xcacel is part of the adventure and charm of this sanctuary. Do not expect large signs or direct highways to a resort. On the contrary, its access, although simple, denotes its character as a protected area. We always recommend planning the visit, as there is no direct public transportation that drops us off at the door.

From Cancún or Playa del Carmen

If we are coming from Cancún or Playa del Carmen, the most comfortable option is to rent a car. We will take federal highway 307 heading south. Playa Xcacel is located approximately 25 kilometers south of Tulum, just before reaching the town of Chemuyil. There is a sign, discreet but visible, indicating the entrance to the Xcacel-Xcacelito Sea Turtle Sanctuary. The journey from Cancún can take around 1.5 to 2 hours, and from Playa del Carmen, approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. The parking is basic but sufficient, and a voluntary donation is generally requested for the maintenance of the sanctuary.

From Tulum

From Tulum, the journey is much shorter, just about 15 or 20 minutes by car heading north on federal highway 307. We can also opt to take a 'colectivo' (a shared transport van) from downtown Tulum heading to Playa del Carmen or Cancún, asking the driver to drop us off at the entrance to Xcacel. From there, it is a short and pleasant walk along a dirt path to the beach.

It is important to remember that, as a protected area, the access hours are limited, generally from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and it is essential to respect the instructions of the sanctuary's park rangers and volunteers.

The Sand and the Water

When we talk about Playa Xcacel, the description of its sand and water is a poem in itself. We have visited many Mexico beaches, but few have offered us such a pure and pristine combination.

The Sand

The sand of Xcacel is of an immaculate whiteness and has an incredibly fine texture, almost like flour. It is a pleasure to walk barefoot on it, feeling its coolness under our feet even on the hottest days. The sand extends for about 650 meters, offering ample space to relax without feeling overwhelmed by the crowd. Due to its sanctuary status, the sand is impeccably clean, free of the trash and debris we sometimes find on more urbanized beaches. It is a tangible reminder of the care and dedication given to this ecosystem.

The Water

The waters of Playa Xcacel are simply spectacular. Their crystal-clear turquoise hue is hypnotizing, and their transparency allows us to see the seabed with astonishing clarity. The waves are generally gentle and calm, making it an ideal place for swimming and relaxing. The water temperature is warm and pleasant for most of the year, inviting us to dive in and enjoy without hesitation. In addition to the main beach, Xcacel has a small but charming cenote, the Cenote Xcacelito, a freshwater and brackish water pond, home to fish and mangroves, perfect for a refreshing dip and a different snorkeling experience. The combination of the open sea beach and the cenote is unique and adds immeasurable value to this destination.

Services and Facilities

For us, the true beauty of Playa Xcacel lies in its simplicity and its focus on conservation. This means we should not expect the infrastructure of a luxury resort or a commercial beach. Here, the services are basic and designed to minimize the impact on the ecosystem.

Basic Facilities

Upon arrival, we will find a rustic parking area where we can leave our vehicle. We mentioned that a voluntary donation is requested for access, money that goes directly to the maintenance of the sanctuary and turtle conservation programs. Near the entrance and the parking area, there are basic bathrooms/WCs, usually of an ecological type, which are maintained by the sanctuary staff. It is essential to use them responsibly and remember that we are in a delicate natural environment.

Absence of Commercial Services

It is crucial to understand that at Playa Xcacel there are no beach bars, restaurants, shops renting umbrellas and sunbeds, or street vendors. This absence is intentional and part of its charm. We always recommend bringing everything necessary for our visit: drinking water, snacks, biodegradable sunscreen (very important to protect the reef!), towels, and any other personal items.
