How to get to Praia de Altura
Getting to Praia de Altura is relatively easy, as the Algarve has an excellent communication network. We recommend several options so you can choose the one that best suits your travel style.
By car
This is, without a doubt, the most comfortable option and the one that will give you the most freedom to explore not only the beach but also its charming surroundings. If you are coming from Spain, access is direct via the A-49, which becomes the A22 (Via do Infante) after crossing the border at Vila Real de Santo António. From the A22, we will take exit 17 towards Altura/Monte Gordo. If you are coming from other parts of Portugal, the A22 is the main artery that runs through the Algarve from east to west. You can also opt for the N125, a national road that passes through coastal towns and offers more picturesque landscapes, although the journey is slower. The beach has nearby parking areas, some free and others paid, especially in high season.
By plane
The nearest airport is Faro Airport (FAO), about 60 kilometers away. From there, you have several options: you can rent a car directly at the airport (which we always recommend for the freedom it offers), take a taxi or private transfer, or use public transport. For the last option, you will need to go from the airport to the Faro bus station and from there take a bus to Altura or Vila Real de Santo António, which has frequent connections.
By public transport
Although a car is ideal, it is also possible to get there by public transport. There are buses connecting Faro with Altura and other nearby towns. The most important bus station in the area is the one in Vila Real de Santo António, from where there are local connections to Altura. If you prefer the train, you can take a train to Vila Real de Santo António and from there take a taxi or a local bus to the beach. We advise you to check the schedules in advance, as the frequency may vary depending on the season.
The sand and the water
Ah, the sand and water of Praia de Altura! These are, without a doubt, two of its greatest attractions and the reasons why we fell in love with it at first sight. The sand here is of exceptional quality: fine, soft to the touch, and of a golden color that shines under the Algarve sun. It is perfect for walking barefoot, for children to play building their sand kingdoms, or simply for spreading out a towel and enjoying a day of relaxation without worrying about the discomfort of stones or coarse sand. We are always surprised by how clean and well-maintained it is, a reflection of the commitment to quality held by its Blue Flag.
And if the sand is wonderful, the water is not far behind. The waters of Praia de Altura are, for the most part, calm and crystal-clear, with a blue-green hue that invites you to swim. The absence of strong currents and the shallow depth at the shore make it an ideal place for families with young children, who can splash and play in complete safety. We have found that the water temperature is considerably warmer than in other areas of Portugal, especially during the summer months and early autumn, making each dip a real pleasure. It is the kind of water that invites you to stay for hours, floating carefree and enjoying the gentle sway of the waves. It is a true liquid embrace that revitalizes us and makes us forget the stress of everyday life. The type of seabed at the shore is predominantly sand, which facilitates access to and exit from the sea.
Services and facilities
One of the great advantages of Praia de Altura is the complete range of services and facilities it makes available to its visitors, making the beach experience comfortable, safe, and very pleasant. We highly value when a beach is not only beautiful but also well-equipped, and Altura fulfills co
