From the moment we approach Praia do Camilo, the excitement begins to build. We are faced with a stunning view: ochre and golden-toned cliffs rising majestically over an unreal turquoise blue sea. What really sets this beach apart is its access: a long, winding wooden staircase, with over 200 steps, that gracefully descends the cliff, inviting us on a journey to a hidden paradise. Each step offers a new perspective, a new opportunity to marvel at the landscape unfolding before our eyes. Upon reaching the bottom, we discover not just one, but several small interconnected coves and caves, some accessible on foot through tunnels carved into the rock, making exploration a constant adventure.

How to Get to Praia do Camilo

Getting to Praia do Camilo is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite straightforward. The beach is located very close to Lagos, one of the most touristic and accessible cities in the Algarve, in the district of Faro.

By Car

This is, by far, the most comfortable and popular option for most visitors. From Lagos, the journey is very short, just about 5-10 minutes by car. We must follow the signs towards Ponta da Piedade, as Praia do Camilo is located in the same area. There is a free parking lot (though limited in size and filling up quickly in high season) right at the top of the cliff, next to the 'O Camilo' restaurant. We recommend arriving early, especially during the summer months (July and August), to secure a spot. Once parked, access to the beach is exclusively via the famous wooden staircase.

On Foot from Lagos

For hiking lovers and those who wish to enjoy the coastal landscape, it is possible to reach Praia do Camilo on foot from the center of Lagos. The route is beautiful, following the coastal path that passes by other beaches like Praia da Batata and Praia Dona Ana. The walk can take between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on our pace and the starting point in Lagos. It is an excellent way to appreciate the panoramic views of the cliffs and the sea before descending to the cove.

By Bus or Taxi

From Lagos, we can take a local bus that gets us close to the Ponta da Piedade area, from where we would have a short walk to the beach. However, frequencies may be limited. A more direct, though more expensive, option is to take a taxi or a ride-hailing service from anywhere in Lagos, which will drop us off directly at the beach entrance.

The Sand and Water

When we step onto the sand of Praia do Camilo, we immediately notice its quality: it is fine, golden sand, very pleasant to the touch and perfect for laying out our towel and relaxing. Its color contrasts wonderfully with the intense blue of the ocean and the reddish tones of the cliffs, creating a color palette that is a delight for the eyes. The beach is relatively small, especially during high tide, so it can fill up quickly in high season. However, the small coves and tunnels connecting different sections offer us the opportunity to explore and find quieter corners.

The waters of Praia do Camilo are, without exaggeration, spectacular. They are famous for their transparency and incredible turquoise color, which invites an immediate dip. The cove is protected by the surrounding cliffs, which means the waters are usually calm with few waves, making it an ideal place for swimming and enjoying a relaxing bath. The water temperature, as in the entire Algarve, is cooler than in the Mediterranean, but very pleasant during the summer months, ranging between 19°C and 22°C. It is the perfect place to cool off from the heat of the sun and feel the purity of the Atlantic.

In addition to its clarity, the underwater richness of Praia do Camilo is remarkable. The rocks and underwater formations host a variety of marine life, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling. With a mask and snorkel, we can observe small fish, crabs, and other marine species in their natural habitat, adding an adventurous dimension to our visit to this beautiful beach. The predominant ground type is sand, but near the cliffs and in the cave areas, we will find rocky formations that add interest to the landscape and that we should consider when walking or entering the water.

Services and Facilities

It is important to note that Praia do Camilo is a beach of exceptional natural beauty, but its direct services on the sand are limited, which contributes to its wild and authentic charm. We will not find the typical infrastructure of large beaches or
