When thinking about the beaches of Faro, it is inevitable that Praia Nova occupies a prominent place. Its name, which means 'New Beach', can be misleading, as its popularity and deep roots in the local imagination are ancient and profound. It is part of the extensive and beautiful Praia de Faro, located on Ilha de Faro, one of the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Here, the golden sand stretches generously, bathed by Atlantic waters that, although cool, invite a revitalizing dip. It is a destination that allows us to disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature, with family, and, ultimately, with ourselves.

How to Get to Praia Nova

Getting to Praia Nova is surprisingly simple, making it a very attractive option for any type of traveler. If we are coming from Faro Airport (FAO), the journey is short and direct, just about 10-15 minutes by car. We can opt for a taxi, a private transfer service, or rent a car, an option we always recommend to explore the charms of the Algarve with total freedom.

From the center of Faro, the route is equally comfortable. The beach is connected to the mainland by a bridge that crosses one of the lagoons of the Ria Formosa. There are several public transport options available, especially during the summer months, with regular buses that take us directly to the island and leave us just steps from the sand. If we prefer to drive, access is easy and, although parking can be a challenge in high season, there are designated areas and, sometimes, paid parking lots that make life easier. We always advise arriving early to secure a good spot, especially if we visit the Faro beach in the middle of August.

The Sand and Water

The sand of Praia Nova is, without a doubt, one of its greatest attractions. It is a soft golden color with a fine texture that is pleasant to the touch, perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles, or simply lying down to sunbathe. The width of the beach allows that, even on the busiest days, we can always find a corner where we feel comfortable and with enough space. There are no annoying rocks or pebbles to hinder our steps; the ground is pure sand, smooth and welcoming.

The Atlantic waters in this area are generally calm and clean, which has earned Praia Nova the prestigious distinction of the Blue Flag, a seal of environmental quality and safety. The water temperature, although not tropical, is very pleasant during the summer months, ideal for cooling off from the Algarve heat. The shallow depth near the shore makes it a safe place for children, who can play and splash without worries. The transparency of the water often allows us to observe small fish and marine life hiding beneath the surface, adding a touch of natural charm to our experience.

One of the strong points of Praia Nova is the excellent range of services and facilities available to us, ensuring a comfortable and worry-free beach day. From the moment we arrive, we notice the infrastructure designed for the visitor's well-being. There are ample parking areas, although, as we already mentioned, it is advisable to arrive early in high season.

For our comfort, the beach has showers to wash off the salt and sand before heading home, as well as clean and well-maintained bathrooms/WCs. The presence of lifeguards during the bathing season gives us additional peace of mind, knowing that there are professionals watching over our safety. Furthermore, for those seeking a day of total relaxation, there are sun lounger and umbrella rental points, allowing us to travel lighter and enjoy to the fullest without carrying our own equipment. The chiringuitos and restaurants right on the beach are a delight, offering everything from quick snacks and refreshing drinks to full meals with sea views. And an important detail for us is the total accessibility, with walkways and equipment that facilitate access to the sand and sea for people with reduced mobility, demonstrating the beach's commitment to inclusion.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Praia Nova depends a lot on our personal preferences. If we are looking for sun, heat, and a lively atmosphere, the months of June, July, and August are ideal. During this period, the air and water temperatures are optimal for swimming and beach life, and all services are in full operation. However, it is also the high season, which means the beach will be more crowded and accommodation and service prices may be higher. If we don't mind the crowd and enjoy the summer bustle, this is our time.

For those who prefer a quieter atmosphere, but with equally pleasant weather, May, September, and early October are fantastic months. The sun still shines strongly, temperatures are mild, and the water still invites a swim, but the influx of tourists is considerably lower.
