How to Get to Playa Macao

Getting to Playa Macao is relatively easy, especially if we are staying in the Punta Cana or Bávaro area. Its proximity to these tourist centers makes it a perfect half-day or full-day excursion. We have several options to reach this paradisiacal corner, each with its own advantages.

By Rental Car

Renting a car offers us the most flexibility. From Punta Cana or Bávaro, the journey to Playa Macao usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes. The main highway, the Coral Highway (DR-3), will take us most of the way, and then we will take a well-signposted turnoff. The last few kilometers can be a bit rougher. Once at the beach, we will find informal parking areas, often managed by the owners of the chiringuitos, who for a small fee will look after our vehicle. It is an option we recommend if we value independence and want to combine the visit to Macao with other stops.

By Taxi or Private Transport

If we prefer not to drive, a taxi or private transport service is an excellent alternative. Taxis are easily available at all hotels. It is advisable to negotiate the fare before starting the trip, or even arrange for the driver to wait for us for a few hours. Many organized tours also include transport, which can be convenient if we don't want to worry about logistics.

Organized Tours and Buggy/Quad Excursions

One of the most popular and exciting ways to get to Playa Macao is through an organized buggy or quad excursion. These tours are very common in the La Altagracia region and usually include a stop at Macao. They allow us to explore the Dominican rural landscape, cross plantations, and culminate the adventure with a refreshing dip in the waters of the beach. It is a fantastic option if we are looking to add a touch of adventure to our day.

Local Public Transport

For the more adventurous travelers on a tight budget, there is the option of using local public transport, known as 'guaguas'. However, this option can be more complex and require transfers, as there is no direct and regular route to the beach. While it is an authentic experience, it is not the most comfortable or efficient for most tourists. We prefer the previous options to ensure a smoother arrival.
