How to Get to Playa Cabarete

Getting to Playa Cabarete is relatively straightforward, as it has good connections. The nearest international airport is Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) in Puerto Plata, just a 20-30 minute drive away. From there, we can take a taxi directly to Cabarete, or if we prefer a more economical option, there are guaguas (local buses) that cover the route.

From Other Airports

If we arrive in the Dominican Republic through other airports, such as Cibao International Airport (STI) in Santiago, the journey is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. From Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, the trip is longer, about 3.5 to 4 hours, but there are intercity bus options from companies like Caribe Tours or Metro Tours that will take us to Sosúa or Puerto Plata, from where we can easily connect to Cabarete. We can rent a car if we desire more freedom to explore the surroundings, although in Cabarete itself, walking or using motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) is most common.

The Sand and Water

The sand of Playa Cabarete is a light golden hue, fine and soft to the touch, making it perfect for walking barefoot or relaxing in the sun. Along its approximately 2.5 kilometers in length, the texture can vary slightly, but overall, it is very pleasant. We find a beach that invites movement, not only because of the constant breeze but also due to the gentle slope that allows easy entry into the water.

The water, with its characteristic Caribbean turquoise color, is warm year-round, making it a pleasure for swimming, even in the winter months. However, what truly defines Cabarete's water are its waves and winds. Thanks to its location and the trade winds, the bay offers exceptional conditions for water sports. In the area closest to the shore, the water is relatively calmer, ideal for beginners or for a refreshing dip. As we move further out, the waves become more pronounced, creating the perfect setting for kitesurfers and windsurfers who glide across the sea with impressive skill. The water clarity is good, allowing us to see the sandy bottom in many areas, although it is not a place famous for snorkeling directly in the main bay due to the activity and movement of the sand.

Playa Cabarete is very well-equipped to welcome its visitors, offering a wide range of services that guarantee a comfortable and complete experience. Along the coast, we will find numerous chiringuitos and restaurants serving everything from authentic Dominican food to international dishes, many with tables directly on the sand, allowing us to enjoy a meal with sea views. There is no shortage of bars where we can savor a refreshing cocktail at sunset.

For those seeking relaxation, umbrellas and sun loungers are available for rent at most establishments. Safety is also a priority; although there is no centralized lifeguard service along the entire beach, many of the hotels and water sports schools have trained personnel in the areas they manage. We also find showers and toilets/WCs in the beachfront establishments, which is very practical. Parking is plentiful, with several designated areas where we can leave our vehicle safely. Furthermore, the sports zone is omnipresent, with schools offering equipment rental and classes in kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, and paddleboarding for all levels, from beginners to experts. It is, without a doubt, one of the Puerto Plata beaches with the greatest tourist infrastructure dedicated to adventure.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Playa Cabarete largely depends on our priorities. If our main interest is water sports powered by wind, like kitesurfing and windsurfing, the high wind season runs from December to August. During these months, the trade winds are more consistent and stronger, creating perfect sailing conditions. The months of June, July, and August are particularly windy, ideal for the more experienced.

If, on the other hand, we are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, with calmer waters and fewer crowds, the months of September, October, and November are excellent.
